30.03.2025 16:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0"i want to experience a game like i experience a painting, all at once. gameplay doesn't have to exist in four dimensions. trapped behind walls, behind time, behind gates, behind locked doors. gameplay could be free [..] thecatamites famously said a game is some combination of skeleton, red key, score thing, and *magic door*. the thing that's magic about the door is that you can't open it with the red key. you don't need the red key for anything. it's just a key. sometimes a key is just a key. the magic door opens on its own. like magic. it's an automatic door. when you approach a door in a game it should open for you. now that would really be magic. if a door doesn't open automatically, if it's not magic, then it doesn't belong in your game."
it's nice to know that i've been wanting to kill gameplay since 2022. hadn't quite figured it out yet though.
18.02.2025 18:26 β π 11 π 1 π¬ 2 π 0And last thing... I am betting on AI making games soon so these secretive clients can flock to those kinds of devs that openly state in their header they "are merged with AI". You can't even fucking imagine how happy I'll be when those start being a big group of people.

28.03.2025 11:04 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0Also, FUCK THE WEB. WORST MISTAKE IN HUMANITY, EVER! And that comes from a dev that uses an html5 engine and IS betting on web platforms being the future π€£
In this topic I agree with Jonathan Blow, which isn't a usual thing
But yeah, bottom line is I hope clients that act like making games is the same as making websites even after insisting the levels of complexity there is never have a cold side in their pillow. And that their phone charger fits, but not quite, and it falls off easily without them seeing it.
28.03.2025 10:58 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There are ways to manipulate and social-engineer boundaries in these cases, but I'm not built for that. I just want to make games, man, and I've seen more bags in my eyes than usual these two years. Sheesh. Hope some independent work can heal me this year; Best team I could wish for so here's hoping
28.03.2025 10:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I won't mention the things that happened or were said to me, but they are akin to being spoken as a child by an old dog that works in marketing but knows "business" so acts like they know yours then don't want to learn anything. So much pretentious distance that it inevitably breaks everything.
28.03.2025 10:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0THAT IS how insulting things can get. Working in good faith then told that "they could get it cheaper" which is classic freelancing, but gems like "you are just a copywriter, what you do is mine" even when the money was from international grants and you are outsourcing 100%. That happens mid-dev.
28.03.2025 10:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I have heard from top 10 indie developers that back when freelancers, clients HIRED "mobile game development studios" as consultants because they didn't like how the Hades-inspired game was being developed by a single person that was doing an INCREDIBLE job at developing and communicating.
28.03.2025 10:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The games suffered, and oh fuck if I tried, I even finished some projects after a client almost did *a very stupid and sad thing* just in case they came back to the senses. To me this was never for money, I would be doing something other than games then.
28.03.2025 10:35 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I can't say how bad things got, but there were definitely things that would make 100% of devs instantly get out. And it came from people that you wouldn't even suspect from. And in the end it's pity I feel, I wish I could have helped but things got in their head and antagonized everyone.
28.03.2025 10:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Then the other group: the secretists. I don't say corporatists, because I've been in situations where they were one of the most dispensable business owners I had ever seen (not an insult because they openly stated it), so the problem wasn't the "corporativism" by itself, but the secrets...
28.03.2025 10:11 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0My best clients all of these years have been the more naive ones. Such good people, too. All on time, and I could adapt timings without any issue because boundaries were clear. I am still friends with lots of them, and cheer them on as their games rise on webs or app stores :)
28.03.2025 10:03 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Like, there MUST be a good way to go about this.
Problem is simple: clients know shit, nor listen if you clearly, repeatedly or EVEN make sure they verbally understand the limits of the medium and it's complexity. They are busy busy make money machines and... Open dialog? Succint documentation? Nah
I guess this boils down to the machinery of the C word, and the strange/frustrating/unfair hierarchies it has created. Oh well. I think my point it is I may take a break from freelancing if I can (basically saying no 60% more) to think about this. Maybe there is a way.
28.03.2025 09:49 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I think that's just part of being a freelancer though, we get a lot more of those clients that essentially make money by not doing anything, outsourcing work and then claiming ownership. Some are nice and let us have credit, though, and in general I can respect that attitude if they are used to it.
28.03.2025 09:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0But I find it funny because we essentially engineer customized software for an unlimited quantity of devices as an individual with a *supposed* cultural distance from clients.
But even fucking architects have given me bad shit about a corner case on Nvidia cards after cutting the deadline by 40%.
This is obviously from my limited pov, I know damn well how worse things are at corporations and bigger projects/teams. I don't even want to think about it.
28.03.2025 09:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've seen and felt it so many times. Even veteran ones. For some time it gave me impostor syndrome, when I was more naive and young. I want to research the issue because freelancing games is still cool as a concept. Maybe a talk? Too niche?
28.03.2025 09:41 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It's funny how the lead developer is treated the worst in client projects, specially when solo while you'd think it would be the opposite.
