Hennepin County used to give us some money for IT support and expert witness expenditures. We used to get our laptops, court security network tools, and the software for our confidential discovery portal from county money with the support of county IT staff. That changed last year in 2025 when the State of Minnesota started giving us those things. Now in 2026 the state is also giving us the money for expert witnesses. Thus, the non-story. Technically yes, Hennepin is giving us less money. But that's because the state used to give Hennepin that money, and Hennepin would then route it to us. Now the state just gives that money directly to us. The end. That's the story. Dollar-wise, there is zero decrease. Our wages, benefits, staffing, caseloads, IT infrastructure, and funding for expert witnesses is all staying at the same amounts our union contract with the state Board of Public Defense already gave us in years past. If you want the simple truth of it, that's all there is to this.
