Nature security assessment on global biodiversity loss, ecosystem collapse and national security This strategic assessment explores how global biodiversity loss and the collapse of critical ecosystems could affect the UK’s resilience, security and prosperity.

An across-government technical assessment published today recognises that "nature is the foundation of national security" and that "every critical ecosystem is on a pathway to collapse". A rational response to this would be to get very serious about nature recovery.

Let's explain rocks by sandwiches. Trust me. Earth builds rock three main ways: it stacks, it cools from melt, or it presses and reheats what it already made. #Geology 🧡

Rolling hills and patchwork fields divided by traditional dry stone walls in the Yorkshire Dales under a dramatic, cloudy sky. Sheep graze in the foreground, with sunlight highlighting sections of the green farmland.

A public consultation for the draft North Yorkshire & York Local Nature Recovery Strategy is now running until 11 August. And there are a number of events for Dales-based land managers and farmers. Find out more πŸ‘‡

A red warning sign is attached to a wooden post next to a wire fence in a rural area. The sign reads 'YORKSHIRE DALES NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY WARNING RISK OF FIRE Please do not smoke or light fires.' The background shows an open field with green grass, rocks, and hills under a clear blue sky

The heatwave is back, and the fire risk is high. Please help keep the countryside safe.

πŸ”₯ No barbecues or campfires
🍾 Take glass bottles and jars home
🚬 Dispose of cigarettes properly
πŸ“ž If you see a fire, call 999

With thanks North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue

The challenge this week is to find a flowering aquatic wild plant, like this free-floating Frogbit pictured. A fascinating group of plants which have adapted to life in a watery environment πŸ’¦ 🌱

With warmer temperatures forecast for the end of the week hopefully you’ll appreciate a watery theme for this week’s challenge! Find wild or naturalised aquatic plants in bloom and share for #wildflowerhour this Sunday 8-9pm using the hashtag #AquaticPlants πŸ’¦πŸŒ±

The National Fire Chiefs Council has reported over 200 more wildfires this year than for the same period in 2022 - the worst year on record for wildfires, and more hot spells are predicted.

Most wildfires are preventable, help us to keep people, nature and wildlife safe.
