I was the only one in my theater who laughed really hard at the scene where Chris Pine beats those guys up at the gas station in Hell or High Water. Then I came home and found out that, when Jesse saw it, HE was the only one at HIS showing who laughed at the same scene. #TrueLove

As soon as I saw that my hometown AMC is going to be showing SHIN GODZILLA next Wednesday when E and I are visiting, I bought tickets, not because I'm afraid it will sell out, but because I want to discourage them from canceling the screening. (Two others already bought tickets!)

I've worked with Erik at IGN as well as the A.V. Club. He is a patient, insightful, hard-working editor who cares about quality and voice. To lay him off is essentially a pledge that you want your publication to be worse. As anyone, anyplace would be lucky to snag him.

This sounds nutty at first because it appears to describe exactly what tons of NYT arts coverage does (as Ann points out!). BUT I think it makes more (and grimmer) sense when you consider how popular Ending Explained pieces are and I bet anything that's the "information and context" described here.

He should have dropped by Kips Bay, where it played to a muscular ONE THIRD FULL auditorium at 7PM on a Friday, with Marisa and I and also Jack McBrayer and Josh from 30 Rock

Marisa fondly recalled reading about how test audiences "hated" that scene. After McBride beats the crap out of that guy and dumps garbage on him, E settled down from laughing long enough to ask "did this movie do well?"

I'm not sure if ever a movie has made E laugh as much as HOT ROD just did.

Josh Trankβs 2015 Fantastic Four does at least one thing better than the MCU version
The movie doesnβt feel finished, but its first hour reimagines a familiar story as dark sci-fi
I watched/rewatched all the Fantastic Four movies this summer and I was surprised by how well FANTASTIC FOUR (2015) came off... for like an hour. It implodes instead of ending. But before that, it reminds me of the better early 00s superhero movies! www.polygon.com/marvel/61651...

Speaking of animated sitcoms from my youth that wound up running an insane number of seasons, I reviewed Season 14 (!) of KING OF THE HILL. I love how Mike Judge, whether as Hank or Beavis or Butt-Head, can make me laugh with just an intonation.

Yes! I don't think I saw the actual one where they reveal it, but definitely one that presumed our knowledge of this. I was shook! But her essence remains.

Catching up with a decade-plus of Simpsons in largely random order, I find that the show grievously overuses the following characters:
-Superintendent Chalmers (should not be in every Skinner scene)
-Nelson's mom (extremely sour/cruel jokes)
-Sideshow Mel
-Crazy Cat Lady

A mostly-true phenomenon of press screenings is that mainstream comedies are kinda deadly to see that way, but I have to say, the particular experience of me, the 9yo, and like five other randos (out of ~20) laughing in glee while everyone else sat stone-faced was solid. Def better than Netflix.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps grinds Marvel's First Family into the MCU machinery
It's definitely the best movie to feature these characters so far. But does The Fantastic Four: First Steps have enough else to offer?
ICYMI: I reviewed THE FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS, a middle-of-the-road MCU entry with some cool production design and a Silver Surfer I would describe as "weirdly hot" (but restrain myself from saying so in the review). www.avclub.com/the-fantasti...

Right? I didn't even like that one that much but it is objectively nutty to have him notch as many subsequent appearances as anyone in ETERNALS

Most of their "Phase 4" movies were hits of some sort or another. Three years after it ended, the only one with a sequel in production is Spider-Man, because Sony cranks those out on the regular. And maybe THUNDERBOLTS if you count that as BLACK WIDOW 2?
23.07.2025 19:17 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0
One of the weirdest things about the Marvel Method is that they've clogged their pipeline so much that even in a supposedly slimmed-down release schedule, they guarantee that any hit movie will have to wait a ridiculous amount of time for a sequel. F4 will prob hit and MIGHT get a 2028 follow-up.
