An ethics complaint was filed against me in response to my critique of VT’s Abenaki recognition process. The House Ethics Panel closed it without a hearing. No wrongdoing.
I’m sharing all docs and discuss why these weaponized tactics matter as City Council debates what replaces the Graylock statue.

Who decides when our National Guard is deployed?

In light of recent National Guard deployments and growing questions about how those decisions are made, I’ve written a blog post explaining H.355 — a bill I introduced to add transparency and accountability to the federalization process.

Vermont just shipped two more bus loads of incarcerated men to a for-profit prison in Mississippi. Governor Scott and his lead counsel are now calling prison a place for “healing”. This is a dangerous shift and it’s no accident. More detailed thoughts:

Plans to replace Burlington monument bring controversy over state-recognized tribes to Queen City leaders - VTDigger The Abenaki Nation at Missisquoi commissioned a new sculpture to replace a monument to a historic Abenaki chief, but the plan has drawn opposition from a state legislator in Burlington.

We must stop excluding the undisputed descendants of the original keepers of this land when we make decisions that impact them. The United Nations Declaration on the rights of Indigenous Peoples is crystal clear on this.

The National Park Service is already underfunded and understaffed. To put its budget on the chopping block as we continue to see a rise in visitors at parks across the county is reckless and thoughtless.

H. 355 has not moved from the committee wall. The administration is currently waging an unconstitutional war without the approval of Congress. Trump has already shown his willingness to abuse the process fie federalizing the Guard. H. 355 provides a much needed check in that abuse. Vermont can lead.

The continued overuse and abuse of the National Guard, from unconstitutional deployments into war zones, extraneous deployments like DC following the January 6th riot & recently to CA, and all-around poor treatment in housing and care, is becoming commonplace.

All this means is that these kids will remain in makeshift FEMA trailers that are already beyond their use ability or on an air mattress in hastily put together spaces in various law enforcement facilities. NIMBYism will prevent care of our youth. #vtpoli

There will be some that applaud the failure to comply with the extensive list of requirements Vergennes gave to approve some minor zoning changes that would have allowed the state to build a new facility for justice involved youth on land already owned by the state. This is a hortsighted. 🧵 1/2
