LATE

We are not ever lost
and nothing delays us.
We carry the sun on our backs
and cover such ground
as you would not believe.

We are the colonists of dark,
the cousins of radiance,
who shall bloom
among you.

Listen,
do not move in your hard beds;
we enter your rooms
and the candles are lit
as if by themselves,
stars gather,
dreams pour
into your pillows,
memories of the moon,
warm bouquets of air. . . Listen,

even now

Another by Mark Strand from The New Yorker, this one for the completist. An early version of "The Coming of Light" (one of his most celebrated poems), "Late" was never collected, and hence, has been relegated to the dustbin of literary history. Enjoy!

It is so worrying.
What's the point of a world where AI writes poetry with no heart, that's reviewed and reposted by AI with no understanding... Social media is already awash with vacant, meaningless bots conversing with bots. It's so sad.

Sorry about the rant but I'm angry about this! They haven't released the comment publicly on facebook so I thought I'd screencap my complaint.

Wow I guess you’re charging £15 just to tell people to ask ChatGPT to write a poem for them, if this sorry AI mess is indicative of how your institution values the arts!
It’s so disappointing and disheartening when supposed artists advocate for the replacement of other creative fields by AI by association. If you’re willing to post such a load of warped crap to advertise your supposed creative workshop I think that tells me everything I need to know about the quality of said workshop and the value you actually place on the arts.
I’d expect this kind of thing from a scam, not a university with an arts department, and I certainly would have expected better of Ashley Hickson-Lovence, Dr Hodgkinson, Jacqueline Saphra etc. I'm astonished frankly.

Really disappointed in the Uni of Suffolk for promoting a supposed creative poetry workshop with this hideous #AI poster.

What are you going to get for your £15 ticket? "Type 'Hey ChatGPT, write me a poem'"?

So much for solidarity with other creative disciplines huh?
