Good morning everyone. This is not the post we wanted to make today. Unfortunately, at this point it is safe to assume that our Black Oystercatcher pair lost their chicks. We think that it was sometime Friday or possibly Saturday. As you may know this was their third attempt this season and most likely last as it is so late in the summer. This of course raises the question as to what happened. There are so many factors. We had reports of people up in the rocks late at night for multiple evenings last week. A group was observed flashing a green laser and disturbing the nesting birds late as well. So, this is a good opportunity to remind everyone that it is vital to stay out of nesting areas and to not harass wildlife. We want to emphasize that the guidelines to stay out of restricted areas are not just when we have staff on the beach. These are guidelines that hold true 24/7 and all year long. We will continue to monitor and keep their nesting area closed to give them a much needed break. Thank you for helping us to protect these beautiful birds.

The black oystercatcher chicks at Haystack Rock at Cannon Beach died because someone kept pointing lasers at them.

Why are people like this? This nesting pair has never had a successful fledgling. It's too late in the season for them to try again.
