in any case. on a positive note. Demon Days functioned so well as one great Whole Work as an album. It felt like a carefully collected and curated exploration of ideas and thoughts.
The Mountain is their first album since that feels that way to me.
It's been a while since I've revisited it, but one notable example for me was, IIRC, some songs had a whole brass section playing and I LITERALLY COULD NOT TELL THEM OUT from all the synth unless it was at full volume, and even then, they were muffled and just. part of the noise.

probably one of my most cancellable take is that Plastic Beach is Not Actually Good, sans some singles, and a lot of it is because of Damon's production debut being so. Noob-ish.
You can tell where he TOOK AWAY colour and personality from the arrangements and made songs sound smaller in scale.
I've recently come to terms with the fact that a LOT of the things that make Demon Days a 10/10 album for me were because of Danger Mouse's contributions as a producer.
That said, The Mountain by far is their best album since then.
