How the deadliest hours of the devastating Texas floods unfolded
This part of Texas Hill Country is known for flash floods. Why were so many people caught off guard when the river turned violent?
14 of my colleagues helped put together this story on how the Texas floods unfolded - down to the details of what girls at the Mystic camp were eating for dinner before the warnings came in

Under Obama, Trump 1.0 and Biden, the Ed Dept did not say who filed a complaint to prompt a federal investigation, but that now appears to be the norm under Trump 2.0 -- latest example today of an investigation into whether schools banning Native American mascots is discrimination

I'll be very curious as to how many grad students, law students, med students, etc turn to private student loans;
private student loans currently only account for about 10-15% of all outstanding student debt, but they have no caps on monthly payments nor any forgiveness programs

Every time they accuse reporters of being nefarious by doing their job, they chill investigative reporting.

It's unclear what the gov't will do. The agencies are supposed to, as of right now, restore funding as the case proceeds. But the Trump admin could appeal and ask for a stay pending appeal, meaning (if approved) the UC researchers wouldn't get their money back yet
Next hearing is July 2

The harms that Plaintiffs have sufferedβand Plaintiffs and the public will continue to
suffer absent preliminary injunctive reliefβare significant. Plaintiffs have shown that the grant
terminations have brought their research to a grinding halt, will likely result in layoffs, and may
lead to the total loss or paring back of projects that were years in the making. This harms the
public interest as well as Plaintiffs. For example, Thakur and her team were within months of
completing a three-year project aimed to βhelp protect communities across California during
wildfire smoke events.β (Dkt. No. 10 ΒΆ 25.) Using highly spatially and temporally detailed
maps, the research seeks to identify βwhere smoke exposure may be very highβ even when βdaily
exposure averagesβ are not. (Id.) Without restoration of funding, her research, with immediate
βdirect clinical and public health relevance,β cannot be completed and will go unpublished
The judge also pointed to research by the plaintiffs that was cut off -- particularly one studying which communities were at heightened risk for health problems from wildfire smoke
