One of the hallmarks of the dangerously stupid is the consistent belief they've found great solutions that experts somehow missed.

Frost: Tonight the people stealing are not folks with tattoos and hoodies but people wearing suits and ties and congressional pins sitting in the capitol now, not in some alley wrapped in darkness but the United States congress wrapped in the flag. It is disgusting and we will never forget this.

Wired is dropping paywalls for FOIA-based reporting. Others should follow As the administration does its best to hide public records from the public, Wired magazine is stepping up to help stem the secrecy

They're called public records for a reason. Starting today, WIRED will *stop paywalling* articles that are primarily based on public records obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, becoming the first publication to partner with @freedom.press to offer this for our new coverage.

(1/3) It needs repeating: in 1994, Ukraine was persuaded to give up its nuclear weapons to Russia in return for the US, the UK, and Russia guaranteeing Ukraine’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity.

How the Senate Voted to Confirm R.F.K. Jr. as Health Secretary The Senate confirmed Mr. Kennedy by a vote of 52 to 48 to lead the department responsible for public health.

True story: when my older boys were little, they both got whooping cough even though they were vaccinated. It was bad. We asked the pediatrician what would’ve happened if they hadn’t been vaccinated. They would’ve died, he said.

The Authoritarian Playbook - Protect Democracy Today’s authoritarian playbook is a process that happens piecemeal and is hard to distinguish from normal political jockeying.

Comparing the Project 2025 Playbook (static.project2025.org/2025_Mandate...) and Project Democracy's Authoritarian Playbook (protectdemocracy.org/work/the-aut...) is a frightening experience.

With the constant barrage of executive orders and nonsense announcements, it is easy for journalists to get lost in the woods. We shouldn't ignore the Greenlands and Gulf of Mexico things, but journalists also need to take a step back and cover the big picture, which is an assault on democracy.

Convicted US Capitol rioter Pam Hemphill turns down Trump pardon Former "Maga granny" Pamela Hemphill tells the BBC the Trump government is trying to "rewrite history".

I was struck this morning by this story of Pamela Hemphill, who refused a pardon

"I pleaded guilty because I was guilty, and accepting a pardon also would serve to contribute to their gaslighting and false narrative…We were wrong that day, we broke the law"

Integrity!

So I just ate a sleeve of Fig Newtons but they're "Just 100 calories per serving!" Curious, I looked to see the serving size. It's 2. Who eats only 2 Fig Newtons and then is like "Whoa, I'm so full. I better stop."? BTW: There were 14 in the sleeve.

The thing about journalists is that they are not merely the ones who could show up, they are the ones who did regardless of what it cost them.

I showed the film She Said to a group of college freshman journalism majors. They had no idea the story behind the story that kicked off the #MeToo movement. They came away inspired. Mission Accomplished.

Cases dropped against reporters arrested for covering protests At least three journalists recently saw unconstitutional charges against them dismissed. It’s progress, but it’s not enough

Even as we head into a second Trump presidency, the fight for press freedom isn’t limited to playing defense.

Actually, we’ve got progress to report.

People are often surprised when I tell them this: both Twitter and Facebook/insta/threads are now specifically engineered to downgrade, hide, suppress real journalism. If this platform is different, that's a huge change
