IL-33-activated ILC2s induce tertiary lymphoid structures in pancreatic cancer - Nature IL-33 induces tertiary lymphoid structures.

#ILC2 as an inducer of tertiary lymphoid structures (#TLS) in cancer!

Beautiful study by Balachandran group at MSK.

I'm so happy to have been able to contribute to this exciting story!

A stromal inflammasome Ras safeguard against Myc-driven lymphomagenesis - Nature Immunology Blander and colleagues report a homeostatic regulatory effect played by inflammasomes in the bone marrow stromal compartment that suppresses premalignant stages of lymphomagenesis.

Ever wonder if the innate immune system protects against cancer in premalignancy? My lab reports that the inflammasome in bone marrow stroma suppresses Ras in preleukemic stem cells restraining lymphomagenesis.

JCI - FOXO1 pathway activation by VISTA immune checkpoint restrains pulmonary ILC2 functions

Another inhibitory receptor regulating ILC2s.

VISTA, upregulated upon activation, negatively regulates ILC2 proliferation and effector functions through AKT-FOXO1 axis both in mice and humans.

VISTA-AKT-FOXO1 axis suppresses OXPHOS and FAO in ILC2s.

A feeding-induced myokine modulates glucose homeostasis - Nature Metabolism The authors identify feimin as a feeding-induced myokine that regulates glucose homeostasis via the MERTK–AKT signalling axis in mice and humans.

🤩 Feimin, a new cytokine encoded by a gene with a previously unknown function, was identified as a synergistic regulator of blood glucose dynamics in concert with insulin.

Insulin = Potent but short action
Feimin = Modest but long-lasting

Interesting

Wow…🤯 Nitrogen-fixing organelle “nitroplast”!

We may be witnessing an active evolutionary process of organelle acquisition endosymbiosis in an eukaryote marine alga, like what is considered to be the process that led to mitochondria and chloroplast.

Unveiling adipose populations linked to metabolic health in obesity Metabolic disease risk in individuals with obesity is variable and influenced by so-far-unknown factors. Reinisch and Ghosh et al. uncovered distinct cell populations and transcriptional programs in adipose tissue that are strongly linked to metabolic disease. The findings suggest that visceral adipose tissue plasticity is key to maintaining metabolic health despite excess adiposity.

Merry festive time🍗🎄

Speaking of festivity and since we’re all thinking about same ole new year resolutions, this study might be a good read to learn about what differentiates metabolically “healthy” vs “unhealthy” obese individuals.

Aside from serotonin receptors, I believe psychedelics bind to TrkB for their antidepressant effect.

Serotonin receptors and TrkB are both expressed on gut-innervating neurons.

I wonder which signaling pathway is involved in the intestinal complications with psychedelics.

Different effects of fatty acid oxidation on hematopoietic stem cells based on age and diet Morrison and colleagues show long-chain fatty acid oxidation has context-dependent effects on hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs). It is dispensable for HSC function in young mice. It becomes necessary for normal HSC function and hematopoiesis in older mice. A high-fat diet increases fatty acid oxidation, and this impairs HSC function.

Long-chain fatty acid oxidation (FAO) is dispensable for hematopoietic stem cells in young mice, while crucial for HSCs in old mice. But then too much FAO is detrimental for HSCs.

Fatty diet makes us unhealthy to the core...literally, our bone marrow…
