as an Irish Jew in America, from the north east but via nashville and now in the upper midwest, I have a lot of thoughts about diaspora and culture.

it is a complex but broadly true pattern among many ... with variations that matter a lot.

anyway I blocked the irish guy mad at me for talking about irish-american traditions, and that's fine. but I wanted to just note this.

stakes vary, perspectives vary, family histories vary. But one isn't more "true" than the other. That's not how diaspora works.

the thing about being part of a diaspora is that your culture is formed around diaspora and people who didn't leave may not share it, even if diaspora culture is a lot about the place from which you left.

At this time, I am speaking of Irish and Irish-American.

Great article, thanks. I’m so glad the Dropkick Murphys and all the other musicians are doing this show. I just saw the Dropkick Murphys last week in the St. Louis area and their left politics were on full display. Great show.

So much of my college days are colored with this band in the backdrop. Irish punk and Appalachian folk have a lot in common with being pissed off at those who keep applying the boot to the neck.

Thisbis reminiscent of people who learned about Rage Against the Machine and Green Day. My dude, what did you think you were listening to for the last 25-35 years?
