Based on my limited knowledge, I believe this is a largemouth bass because its jaw extends beyond the rear of the eye.

Planning a conference can be quite a task, and I really value the hard work our colleagues in the US put into it. It makes me think about whether we should reconsider attending for political reasons, as it could be a great way to show our support and solidarity. What do you think? 3/n

However, I do find myself wondering on the potential long-term impacts of the current situation on the scientific community as a whole. 2/n

I attended a conference this week in the US and had some mixed feelings about it beforehand. Many of my colleagues from Europe were missing-probably for similar reasons. It was a great conference, and I greatly appreciated the insights from the community. 1/n

The photo shows the head of a big Danube salmon.

While photos often struggle to give you an idea of the size of fish, this picture offers a glimpse into the dimensions of the 120 cm Danube salmon (Huchen) we encountered two weeks ago. It’s a great shot to appreciate the scale of this remarkable catch! #fishsky

Exploring R Package Usage in Academia I am running a quick survey to find out which R packages academics use the most in their research and teaching. The goal is to see which tools are essential, spot any gaps, and maybe even discover som...

Hi there, my student is making a survey about the use of R packages in Ecology, could you please spend two mins on filling it πŸ₯Ή Very appreciated! And if you could spread it further (RT), that would be just awesome. ❀️

Growth modeling of the European grayling (Thymallus thymallus L.) in a large alpine river based on age‐at‐length, mark‐recapture, and length‐frequency data Animal growth is a fundamental component of population dynamics, which is closely tied to mortality, fecundity, and maturation. As a result, estimating growth often serves as the basis of population ...

I have a new paper at #JFB that uses Bayesian and frequentist methods to model the growth of the European grayling in an alpine river based on different data sets. If you're interested, you can find the article here: doi.org/10.1111/jfb....

It's fascinating how dependent one place can be on one fish species. I'm in a little fishing town in Mexico, and everything here is about Permit and the fly fishers going after them. #fishsky

You're right about the discontinuity, never tried to use a circular density estimator with ggplot, but probably worth a shot.

Made some circular density plots with ggplot this morning. If that type of graph doesn't have a proper name yet could we name them coffee-stain-plots? #rstats

12,347 tagged fish (13 species in 4 habitats) in a bit over a year. No wonder I'm tired all the time πŸ˜…. My vacation starts tomorrow, and hopefully, I can do some fancy data analysis once I'm back. But for now, I won't spend a thought on that stuff. #fishsky

Hi everyone,
I'm Jan, and I'm working on fish population dynamics. Right now I'm a PhD student at the Technical University of Munich, where I put PIT tags in 13 different fish species at a big river system.

Seems like the fish people are strong here πŸ˜ƒ
