When I started out my uni biology career, during the 'What is Life?' lecture I included Star Trek TV episode references, when I got to 'bags of mostly water' it got me a wall of strange looks, I asked if anyone had ever watched a Star Trek episode from ANY franchise, 2 hands went up. Out of 500.

When I taught 1st yr biol I asked "who is 'better' or 'more advanced'? Bacteria or humans?" Invariably many would pick humans.
