Remember when Boris Johnson was interviewed by Eddie Mair in 2013, who took the tack of confronting Johnson with his various misdeeds and asking, "You're a nasty piece of work, aren't you?"
The scandal was a journalist speaking to a politician this way. Now I'm wondering why he was the only one.

We need to talk more about the triumphs and heroism of student journalists and less about the fuck-ups and obsequiousness of the NYT.

large parts of UK politics are swinging far-right with very, very frightening speed, and racists are getting increasingly open about expressing their bigotry.

something I keep thinking about and which I can't make up my mind on is: were swathes of the right, centre-right and, in some cases, the centre, full of racists hiding their beliefs for decades, or are these people all incredibly suggestible? neither answer is good!

I want to be clear about one thing since the Chicago press isn't getting it: This is NOT about gerrymandering. JB Pritzker is NOT a hypocrite. Texas is already gerrymandered.
This is happening because Texas law dictates that redistricting is to take place every 10 years. 🧵

Feel like its a bad sign about the health of the republic that Pritzker has to talk about TX Dems like they’re the Polish government-in-exile in London

the problem with pointing out that abbott and paxton are flagrantly out of their lane in terms of legal claims is that we now live in a judiciary that is a slot machine for republicans and they are largely willing to slam the slot machine as many times as necessary until they hit a cash out

Most Democrats aren't doing much because they don't have much power but of the ones who do it does seem like Pritzker is the only one who has remembered this whole federalism thing.

Crockett: Listen, Donald Trump is a piece of shit—we know that. But in a functioning democracy, he still wouldn’t be able to get away with this. He’s been able to get away with it because Republicans are complicit and—most importantly—the Supreme Court is complicit.

Luis Alfonso Juarez, 90, lived the American Dream, his family said. “He immigrated to the United States, got his citizenship, bought a home and made a career as an iron worker.” Javier Rodriguez, 15, was the youngest victim. He was honored at what should have been his graduation ceremony in 2022.

But Texas Republicans are now attempting to redistrict MID-DECADE because Donald Trump is demanding it. That's what makes this situation different.
National reporters need to understand and make this distinction.

You mean like Medicaid expansion under the ACA?
Or the voters rights act?
Codification means NOTHING if you don't control the courts.
The reason Obama didn't codify Roe was because
A) he didn't have the votes
B) it would've been killed in 2010.
You have a lot to learn about civics.

For folks wondering why Dems in Congress haven't tried something similar, the rules for quorum are entirely different. In Congress, only a simple majority is needed for a quorum. The same is true for nearly all state legislatures.
TX is rare in having a supermajority quorum requirement.

If all that preceded since 2015 were unknown to me, I would witness Trump’s claim that drug prices have gone down 1500% as a fever dream, a wild impossibility.
But I have lived through it all, and a senile president arguing drugs cost negative money is just the background noise of our reality.

The Trump Administration’s Campaign to Undermine the Next Election
The executive branch is interfering in U.S. elections in unprecedented ways.
I’m not a doomer, but seeing all of this stuff laid out in one place, combined with seeing continued reports of businesses and universities and law firms capitulating to threats, combined with SCOTUS seemingly rubber stamping everything, makes me really, really apprehensive.

I’m very pro-education, but this thread is correct. Many Trump voters got civic education in school, probably better than today’s.
The issue is not lack of understanding, where if someone just explained how US Constitutional democracy works, they’d support. They reject it, and chose to tear it down.

Here's the lie at the center of it:
Pretend that unarmed people walking, including presenting themselves to US officials and requesting asylum in accordance with US law, constitute a foreign military invasion (they obviously do not).
Facing a real invasion, the military could and should respond.
