What unites all factions on the Trumpist Right is the belief that a “leftist” revolution has already taken place, the radical “Left” has taken over the major institutions of American life. As there is nothing left to conserve, nothing short of a radical “counter-revolution” can save the nation.
On the Right, Obama’s presidency was widely perceived as an affront to America’s “natural order,” it supercharged the perception of a loss of cultural dominance. Donald Trump, risen to political prominence as the leading proponent of birtherism, was supposed to restore “order.”
For decades, Republican elites have clung to the idea that they would be able to control the extremist, far-right popular energies on the base they kept stirring, harness them for their own purposes. It has never worked – and instead turned the GOP into an instrument for the extremists.

This is just bog standard bigotry and antisemitism delivered by people who view Jews as an enemy to visit violence upon. And it’s quite bad.
I think the somewhat more nuanced view is that it's not just appealing to dumbest common denominator, which to be honest is one way or another all electoral politics. It's that the us vs. them framing is always zero sum and zero sum thinking is toxic both for general tenor and for good policymaking.
Anyway, in my simple, unreflective understanding, populism by its nature if not definition, appeals to simplicity and simple ideas, at the expense of truth. Populism does not equal progressivism or liberal socialism. /🧵
