Photo Tuk Island, a barrier island in the Inuvialuit Settlement Region of the Northwest Territories. At the current annual rate of erosion, Tuk Island will be breached by the year 2050. Tuk Island provides an important barrier to erosion of the Hamlet of Tuktoyaktuk.

The immediate and harsh reality of #climatechange hazards in northern Canada are strongly felt in Tuktoyaktuk, a primarily Indigenous community on the Beaufort Sea. Homes already relocated at considerable expense due to rapid coastal erosion. Planning report from 2022.

Most around me in rural central Ontario are decidely still in bystander mode.
Not willing to even send an email of protest to those in power in Canada. The wolf will be in the door before they put skin in the game, I fear.

photo of a pie decorated wih a pi symbol for Happy Pi Day on March 14.

Keeping with the spirit of 'Here come the Pi memes' and with how irrational our world is becoming...could we try to limit that to only 1 day?

Artist David Maris 2015 flag series (Bancroft) speaking to murdered and missing indgenous women in Canada

Watching him develop his 2015 series in his York River dam studio & seeing the art community flinch at the message when the work was exhibited, was both a privilege & an eye-opener. Perhaps it was the impetus - when in 2023 - local Indigeous artists created a broad 'Truth' exhibit in Bancroft.

Ed Broadbent's words spoken throughout his career are gems. Never more so than now as we face the need to speak out against illegal foreign actions in other countries.
He eloquently protested U.S. actions in Latin America long ago and his words pertain well to actions in the Middle East now.

We cannot have peace if we are only concerned with peace. War is not an accident. It is the logical outcome of a certain way of life. If we want to attack war, we have to attack that way of life.
Disarmament cannot be achieved nor can the problem of war be resolved without being accompanied by profound changes in the economic order and the structure of society.

A. J. Muste

#Peace activist A.J Muste, in 'Our Generation Against Nuclear War', D. I. Roussopoulos. (1983)
During the Vietnam War, he held a candle alone at the White House every night, until death at age 82 in 1967.
Reason? ‘Oh, I don't do this to change the country. I do this so the country won't change me.’

Women in Canadian History: A Timeline - Canada.ca

Recalling 1975 when the United Nations recognized International Women's Year & began celebrating March 8 as International Women's Day. Most men I knew, young & old, were quite miffed at the time.
Link to Canadian government 'Women in Canadian History: A Timeline' which oddly stops at 2022. Yikes!

Excellent article for Canadians who should not be seeing speculative increases. Production costs are not changing here. We are not resonsible for fossil fuel companies' profit loss due to increases in production or supply cost outside of our borders

I had the good fortune to take UC San Diego's "Climate Change in Four Dimensions" MOOC more than 10 years ago Richard Somerville was one of 4 lecturers as was Naomi Oreskes, Charles Kennel & David Victor. Valuable course!
Would we have a different world if western policy makers had also taken it?

The title of the report is deceiving. Look at the whole article for a global snap shot of a broad range of what specifically is believed to be moral vs immoral.

Satellite images show Iran school strike hit more buildings than earlier reported The images suggest that precision munitions struck other buildings, including a clinic that was also inside the complex.

Opinions abound as to political responsibility and intention but no matter what, the end result is the same.

On Swarms, Davos and the Power of the Powerless Let’s take a look today at the power of individuals against world leaders and what swarm improvisation principles suggest is best to do. This is a rather unusual post for this blog, but hey, …

The Genetic Choir is not a group you would expect to weigh in on quitting use of services of big invasive U.S. tech companies, but they are.👍
This Dutch nonprofit ensemble of contemporary vocal improvisers creates projects & can be approached for collaborations & giving concerts.
Have a look.

Our Story The history of the Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF), formed in 1982 to provide grants to social service organizations.

Worse - Ontario Lottery & Gaming proceeds go to the Min. of Tourism, Culture & Gaming. $$$ from there go to the Ontario Trillium Foundation. Charities providing vital services MAY get to compete for that money from gambling to run their services. Often, it is 'make or break' funding.

I thought I found a small doable role in my rural Ontario town where winter is formidable. Many here are chronically unhoused. Shelter is needed 24 hours/day to keep them alive.
Made progress providing more time indoors but the larger community isn't putting skin in the game with me.
Pep talk needed
