Stage 20 of the 1969 Tour finished on top of the legendary Puy de Dôme. This wonderful image captures Raymond Poulidor being cheered along by throngs of fans on the slopes of the climb. Poulidor finished the 198 km stage in 6th place 2′ 02″ behind stage winner Pierre Matignon.

The two-man winning break of Eddy Merckx and Roger Pingeon at Stage 9 of the 1969 Tour de France. Pingeon won the stage, and Merckx retained the maillot jaune. Coincidently, that one-two Merckx-Pingeon placing was how it ultimately ended up when the Tour finished in Paris.

It was a scorching day on the mountain, but Gimondi won this 222 km mountain stage to the Puy de Dôme. When the race finished in Paris, Gimondi was in 7th place overall.

Louison Bobet accepts a drink from an eager fan on a climb at the 1959 Tour de France. The 1959 Tour turned out to be his last. He was forced to retire from the '59 Tour and made a point of leaving the race at the top of the Col de l'Iseran.
