Wearing the maillot jaune, Eddy Merckx leads Joop Zoetemelk as the duo chase Lucien Van Impe and Bernard ThΓ©venet during Stage 14 of the 1975 Tour de France. Van Impe took the stage victory that day by a margin of 15 seconds over ThΓ©venet.

Number One
The number on his bike tells it all: Eddy Merckx is #1. In this photo, Eddy looks excellent in the maillot jaune of the race leader and awaits a stage start at the 1974 Tour de France.

This awesome image captures a routine moment in a race, but does so in a very composed and striking manner. It shows De Vlaeminck riding away from the camera while his wife, Marleen, in a dress and heels, passes up a glass bottle of water or perhaps wine to take the edge off his pain.

Cigar Break!

Cyrille Guimard enjoys a cigar as he leisurely pedals along during Stage 13 of the 1970 Tour de France. He did not seem too concerned at the time that he was about to face five climbs that day on his 195km ride to Gap!

We love this image of Gimondi cooling off in the mountains of Stage 17 of the 1969 Tour de France. Gimondi was a fantastic rider who won all three Grand Tours: the Tour de France in 1965, the Giro d'Italia in 1967, 1969, and 1976, and the Vuelta a EspaΓ±a in 1968.

The two-man winning break of Eddy Merckx and Roger Pingeon at Stage 9 of the 1969 Tour de France. Pingeon won the stage, and Merckx retained the maillot jaune. Coincidently, that one-two Merckx-Pingeon placing was how it ultimately ended up when the Tour finished in Paris.

Retro Time Trial

Compared to what we see current pro riders wearing and riding at a time trial, Rudi Altig looks almost quaint in this photo from the 1969 Tour. Almost, but not when you look into the eyes. That is a man who could drop the hammer.

Gimondi: Strong As An Ox From March to October!
Like many riders from his time, Felice Gimondi rode the entire season from beginning to end. He is one of only 5 cyclists to win all three Grand Tours!

This photo is from the 1969 Tour where he won at Stage 12 and finished 4th overall.

Eddy left no doubt who was king as he pummeled the field on Stage 17 of the 1969 Tour de France. With four major summits that day - Peyresourde, Aspin, Tourmalet, and Aubisque - Merckx finished alone 7 minutes 56 seconds ahead of 2nd place Michele Dancelli.

Louison Bobet accepts a drink from an eager fan on a climb at the 1959 Tour de France. The 1959 Tour turned out to be his last. He was forced to retire from the '59 Tour and made a point of leaving the race at the top of the Col de l'Iseran.

The 1910 Tour was the first to tackle the high mountains, a brutal shift introduced by race organizer Henri Desgrange. On one punishing climb, eventual winner Octave Lapize famously shouted at the officials, β€œVous Γͺtes des assassins! Oui, des assassins!” (β€œYou are murderers! Yes, murderers!”)
