Mild Hydroalkylation of Terminal Olefins Via Decatungstate/Thiol Cooperative Photocatalysis Here we report the use of a tetrabutylammonium decatungstate (TBADT)/thiol photocatalytic system for selective addition of acetone and other simple ketone, nitrile, and chlorocarbon functionalities to terminal olefins. This system avoids the use of energetic reagents such as peroxides and proceeds under mild conditions using Earth-abundant element catalysts, providing a sustainable approach to Cโ€“C bond formation using activated olefins. Initial exploration reveals that hydroalkylation of unactivated olefins is also possible, though in lower efficiency, and preliminary mechanistic experiments are consistent with a radical mechanism.

Congrats @austinjacious.bsky.social, Paige Sutter, Alex Chavez, and Sebastian Cruz on publishing this cool study on alkene hydroalkylation using TBADT/thiol catalysis! A brand new project area started and led by Austin! #realtimechem

In response to headline โ€œCruz-Led Investigation Uncovers $2 Billion in Woke DEI Grants at NSF, Releases Full Databaseโ€ I want to re-emphasize that all these grants were public record and written in response to public solicitations supporting DEI content. No โ€œuncoveringโ€ or โ€œreleasingโ€ was done here

My favorite part of Bluesky right now is the increasingly specific starter packs being formed. Sign me up for "Queer Chemists who Play Violin, Write Poetry, and Predict Weather Changes With Their Knees"

It helped a lot to do that but it's challenging to find how to translate that outside of writing courses

That's a great point and something I've thought a lot about. I had a writing professor in undergrad who addressed this very well. Unlimited revise/resubmit attempts and progressively larger grading emphasis as semester went on. (First assignment 5%, next 10%, etc.)

Q1: I haven't been a lead course instructor yet, but my career goal is to become a chem professor. I want to emphasize growth over incoming knowledge. A lot of barriers to entry exist in academia and our job is to help dismantle those barriers or help students overcome them.

Not liking Beyonce is a character flaw btw. You donโ€™t have to be in the Beyhive or a stan, but not acknowledging she is THE most talented performer alive is a character flaw.

A reminder that the wonderful @prideinstem.bsky.social has created two starter packs of LGBTQIA+ People in STEM:
