A Different Man features two characters with a facial difference and is explicitly about this disability and living as a visibly disabled person who faces discrimination.

The only reason it’s not in my top 4 is because I’ve only had the chance to see it once.

Runners up:

The Accountant features an autistic man as the main character. While the sequel veers more into the super crip stereotype, I think this one is more matter of fact in its approach.

Not all of these movies set out to make some sort of statement about disability or include a disability justice framework, but these are my favourite movies that include disabled characters
(not the same as saying it’s my favourite or best disability representation)

Unbreakable features Elijah, aka Mr Glass, as a man born with a genetic bone defect that causes easy breaks & fractures.

Here the disability is also used as a narrative device and frames him as opposite to the protagonist, David, who is “unbreakable.”

Memento is probably the most obvious example, with the main character Leonard living with a cognitive disability affecting memory as a result of a traumatic brain injury.
His wife is also diabetic.

His disability is a narrative device to explore how humans lie to each other for happiness.

In Nemo, Marlin learns to trust Nemo and that his son is capable and smart.

Dory learns to trust herself and builds a community

Dory also has a cognitive disability that affects her memory, and the ways others have treated her (impatiently, without trust) has lead to her not having a community.

Gill has a physical disability on his fin and significant scarring from his escape attempts.

Finding Nemo:

Nemo has a limb difference in his “lucky fin” that is significantly smaller than his other one.
This as well as the traumatic loss of his mother leads Marlin to treat him differently, like he is weak or incapable.

Marlin, imo, also has PTSD and anxiety.

Max himself wears a knee brace and suffers from PTSD.

The guitar player is missing his eyes.

The only characters without visible disabilities are the remainders of Furiosa’s tribe and the wives.

In a world post nuclear holocaust, disability has become normal.

Mad Max: Fury Road portrays a lot of disabilities on screen, notably not just in the villains which is a common trope (see Darth Vader, The Baron Harkonnen).

Furiosa is an amputee, most of the war boys have cancer, Immortan Joe requires a breathing apparatus

was supposed to wait until Tues or Weds to work on my long neglected Dreomione WIP but instead my fingers slipped and I wrote the prologue for my Astoria POV un-HEA fic

unfortunately I’d have to write it all before posting because I’d need to have the entire work done to confirm that I did indeed do what I set out for lol.

oh well this is at least 2 years in the future for me anyways

one of my writing goals is to write a pacy page turner that is novel length (60-80k words).

This is literally the opposite of Silver Springs which is slow, light on plot, and will be 280k words.

I think it would be a good challenge

felt well enough to write yesterday and today but am giving myself a few more days to rest and maybe improve more out of an abundance of caution.

Next on the docket is 2-3 chapters of Every Breaking Wave and then I’ll get back to Silver Springs in July.

You can’t fight fascism without disability justice. Fascism creates more disability, which then sees us as replaceable and our deaths as excusable. You can’t fight for humanity without fighting for disabled people.
