This myth of abandonment and lament resonates with the stories of Francisco and Cristobal Uruta: Guarani people who fled the colonial system and were often separated from their families and territories.

When they ascend to paradise, they abandon her; she becomes a night bird who, to this day, laments with her mournful cries, having been left on earth.

According to Montoya, the name ‘Urutau’ means ‘night bird’ and also ‘hawk bird of prey.’ Cadogan records that the Urutau (Nyctibius griseus cornutus) is, in the mythical texts of the Tavyterã and Chiripa, the sister of the Sun and Moon Twins.

These absences may reveal Guaraní survival strategies: some negotiated within the colonial system, others abandoned it completely. The Franciscan register documents control, but also indigenous resistance…

Cristóbal Uruta lived with his wife outside the Franciscan mission, possibly having escaped to gain freedom in an indigenous village, or having been deported by his encomendero to other parts of colonial Paraguay.

Francisco Uruta was probably in Asunción working as a yanacona, an indigenous servant forced to work in the house of his encomendero.

Still, curiously, he doesn't appear as a principal cacique in the list. Both were under the command of Don Fernando Tarei, identified as "main cacique of the same encomienda of another group."

The 1685 census records "Don Francisco Uruta absent in the city" and "Cristobal Uruta absent with his wife." Don Francisco had the colonial title "Don" before his baptismal name, revealing that the Spaniards considered him a Guarani leader.

This census by the Franciscans shows the fragmented lives of the Guarani people who were reduced to working for the Spanish encomenderos in the religious missions such as Yuty. We have identified four Guarani individuals with this name, but we will focus on two of them:

Uruta and Urutau are Guarani names found in 17th-century colonial documents, particularly in the population register of San Francisco de Yuty for the year 1685.

The name "Aguara", according to Montoya, means "fox," and Cadogan records that the Mbyá associate it with the jaguar, while for the Pai Tavyterã, it represents one of the "terrestrial souls" (angüé) that transmigrates.

Hence, Aguara Guazu appears as an Indigenous leader who collaborated with the colonial project. The Jesuits built narratives around figures like him to justify their presence, their role, and delegitimise Indigenous resistance...
