It might be safer in Low Traffic Areas, but not elsewhere. We have fewer children killed in traffic accidents because we have far fewer children playing outside, or travelling independently. Their freedom has been curtailed so that we (adults) can drive and park freely.

If cars can be driven into and back out of the city centre, just not through it, surely there would still be a lot of cars trips in Irish and British cities, and consequently still a need for separated bike lanes?

Just make ensure they have time, space and permission to play throughout their everyday lives. Oh, and enable them to walk and cycle for everyday journeys too.

The transport challenge for low-income households | IPPR Transport policy can make a material difference to people’s finances, especially those struggling to make ends meet. It can also help people better access

New @ippr.org report out today

Transport isn’t working for low-income households

Reducing car dependence is essential for providing greater access to opportunity, cutting transport costs and reducing the harms caused by car-dominated places

Stormont told a judge that tarmacking 3,000 acres of farmland would be less polluting than the industrial farming it has encouraged If you want to save the environment in Northern Ireland, almost the entirety of its surface should be covered in tarmac and concrete over which cars and lorries will drive day and night.

Civil servants working under the direction and control of a Sinn Fein minister put an extraordinary argument before the High Court which exposes how for years Stormont hasn't been - and still isn't - remotely interested in protecting the environment.

Time series of temperatures in Western Europe showing the warming during the average summer day and the warming in the hottest summer day from 1950 to 2022. Data from ERA5.

One of the challenges to understanding climate change is that extremes don't necessarily change in the same way as averages.

In Western Europe, for example, the hottest day of the year is warming noticeably faster than the average summer day.

This is a great piece by @drkarenlucas.bsky.social & @hirr4.bsky.social.

β€œCan the transition to net zero and the push for greener transport also make travel fairer and more accessible for those on low incomes?”

The answer is yes. But only if we make it a priority. The risk is we go the other way.

Two studies looking at the closure of a single coal-fired power plant in 2005 led to lower exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons for babies in utero. This reduction was associated with improved overall neurocognitive skills, social and motor skills in children at 2 years old.

Interesting study looking at road space reallocation schemes in Norway from a social justice perspective.

Given re-prioritising from car use to other modes of transport is a prerequisite for a β€œsocially just transition to a low-carbon society” how should we address resistance to these schemes?

What next?

School Zones, which incorporate local traffic management measures, such as new crossings across main roads, so that people can move between the neighbourhoods.

As a result of a series of deaths the council has put in not one but two new signs and run "a road safety education programme with children" at a local school. The people in this story think that may not be enough.

In 1925 the law gave up its usual role in protecting people from private violence. Instead, it ordered us to submit to the threat by behaving only in ways that motorists found convenient. .... 1/

I used to think that when global warming truly began to bite, deniers would face reality & we could act. Now I think it's more likely it will lead to a kind of fascism that will respond to global warming by, like, executing everyone who says global warming is real.

Where does β€œresilience” come from? From real life experience: encountering other people, solving problems, managing risk, facing challenges. All this children used to get from having the *freedom* to be outside together in their community. All this we have taken away through ignoring their needs.
