02.12.2025 20:45 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A robin can be described to someone partially sighted by focusing on its sounds, feel, and a simplified visual outline of its shape and colours. It is a small bird with a distinctive orange-red chest, a soft chirping song, and a round, plump shape. You can touch its soft feathers to give a tactile sense of the bird and its lightness. It has a cheerful and varied song that is often described as a series of liquid, fluting notes, like a sweet, bubbling stream. It also makes sharp "tuk" or "tick" sounds, especially when it's alarmed or calling to other robins. You can hear the soft rustle of its wings as it flies and the light patter of its feet on the ground. A robin's feathers are very soft and light. You could compare the feeling to a fluffy piece of wool or a very soft, downy material. It has a plump, round body with a short tail. Imagine a soft, plump ball with a short, stubby tail attached. Its head is rounded and small. It's about the size of a small fist. The most striking feature is the bright orange-red on its chest, which feels warm and stands out against the other colours. You can imagine a bright, warm spot of colour on the front of its body. The rest of its back and head are a soft, dull greyish-blue or brown, which you could describe as feeling like a soft, warm stone or a wet pebble after a rain shower.

02.12.2025 10:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Photo taken - Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales 20/11/25 A goldcrest is a tiny, energetic bird, roughly the size of a thumb, with a plump shape and olive-green and grey plumage that feels soft to the touch. Its most distinctive feature is a bright crest on its head: a male has a stripe with a bright orange centre, while a female has a yellow centre, both edged in black. These birds move quickly and make a high-pitched "zi-zi-zi" call that is almost inaudible to some people. Size: It is Europe's smallest bird, about 9 cm long, and feels light, weighing around 6 grams. Colour: It has a dull greyish green back and a buffy-white belly, giving it a blend of soft, earthy tones. Head: The crest is its most recognizable feature, a stripe on top of its head. Male: Has a bright orange centre to the crest. Female: Has a yellow centre to the crest. Wings: Has two pale wing bars that can be felt as subtle ridges on the wings.

01.12.2025 20:06 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Photo taken at Forest Farm Nature Reserve - Cardiff - South Wales A drake mallard is a large, male duck with vibrant green iridescent feathers on its head that shine and feel smooth to the touch, like polished metal. It has a dark, ringed neck, a white collar, and a warm, brown chest and body that is soft and feels like velvet or a smooth, furry cloth. The drake's bill is dull yellow-orange, like a ripe tangerine, and its feet and legs are a contrasting, slightly sticky orange-red. When it moves, you may feel a vibration through the ground as it waddles, and if it swims, the water may feel cool and slick against your hand. The sound of its quack is loud and distinct, like a trumpet, though this may not be audible to some individuals with hearing impairments.

01.12.2025 10:34 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A dunnock is a small, shy bird the size of a robin, with a blue-grey head and chest, and a streaky brown back. Its most distinctive feature is a thin, pointed beak, different from the thicker beak of a sparrow. It is often heard before it is seen, emitting a loud, squeaky song or a high-pitched "peep" call. Dunnocks are quiet and shy, often seen alone or in pairs, creeping along the ground or near bushes. They prefer to stay low to the ground in places like dense shrubs, hedges, and at the edge of flower beds or lawns. They forage on the ground for insects and spiders and will also eat seeds or crumbs dropped by other birds.

01.12.2025 09:41 β π 52 π 4 π¬ 2 π 0A great spotted woodpecker is about the size of a blackbird, with glossy black and white plumage that includes two white patches on its black wings. It has a red patch on its belly and males also have a red patch on the back of their neck, while juveniles have a red cap on their head. The bird is known for its strong, rhythmic drumming sound, its sharp "kik" call, and its distinctive "bouncing" flight.

30.11.2025 15:33 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A sparrow is a small, stout bird, often described by its sounds, touch, and movements rather than its appearance. You can recognize one by its quick, darting flight, the constant chirping sounds it makes, and its tendency to gather in groups to feed and move together. A house sparrow, a common type, is a stocky bird with brown and black streaks on its back and a pale, buff-coloured underside.

30.11.2025 15:30 β π 54 π 3 π¬ 1 π 1A blackbird can be described by its sounds, as well as its size and movement, and a "shiny black" appearance can be related to other senses. You can describe its clear, loud song and the quick, darting way it moves on the ground, sometimes hopping, to the sound of its quick steps. Its "shiny black" feathers can be described as the feeling of something smooth and slick, or perhaps like a very dark, quiet, polished object. Its song is often described as a loud, clear, and beautiful series of whistles and warbles. It has a sharp "chack" or "chok" sound it uses as a warning or alarm call. It moves across the ground with a quick, hopping gait. It takes flight with a direct, rapid movement, and its flight is often low to the ground.

29.11.2025 23:50 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0A fox is a small, dog-like animal with a bushy tail, pointed ears, and a slender snout. Its fur is typically reddish-brown, though it can be other colours, and has dark markings on its front legs that resemble socks. To a partially sighted person, focus on the tactile and auditory details: a fox's movement is quick and silent, like a cat, and it makes a variety of sounds from sharp barks to soft yips. Its sense of smell is also highly developed, which it uses to find food.
