This squid — transparent & beautiful — was spotted during the #SouthSandwichIslands expedition, half a mile beneath the surface. It’s been 37 days & 14 hours since our last squid post. We had an inkling that it was time for some Cranchiidae, the family that comprises abt 60 species of glass squid.

I love all my cats, but this one is... A little special. She came from a family I used to work with when the dad forgot to spay the outdoor cat. She's the smallest of the three, and the youngest (the other two are twins), and finally coming around to prolonged cuddles. Happy Birthday Nobi Rose 🩵

reef squid

A coral reef with an Australian Giant Cuttlefish (Ascarosepion apama) in the centre blending in perfectly. The water is a bit murky and the diver is using a light, but the light isn't on the cuttlefish so it doesn't help show it. The cuttlefish has a dark grey colour with a wavy light grey strip in the middle of its mantle going along its width. It has a dark spot on the back half of the mantle. The cuttlefish has its papillae raised. There is a sandy gravelly patch in the top left corner in the background of the photo.

I'm so used to photos where octopuses are blending in perfectly that I sometimes forget cuttlefish can do it too.

One golden oyster looks like an erect penis where it rises from the center of a larger cluster of less phallic but still fairly phallic mushrooms. They grow on a log in a bright green spring forest. All photos by me

We told our life-size giant squid friend that the museum's whale is a nice, safe, baleen whale, so I think they are just about ready to join the exhibit

I don't actually have a favorite brand, usually just what comes up and catches my eye. I do like that one though! I also have a friend who knows how to make the kind of circle skirt that can accommodate a big petticoat so I have one that she made 👀

Before my trip to Anilao earlier this year, seeing an argonaut was pretty high on my bucket list. And on my second blackwater dive... voila! This is a female (the males are tiny).
