One of the reasons the world is an ugly place to live in for many is because values are treated as branding rather than upheld. This isn’t confined to any one group. It’s a widespread social phenomenon I encounter across people from all walks of life, professions, and the entire political spectrum.

I feel that excluding inner experience from the ontology risks mistaking descriptive success for explanatory sufficiency. From my perspective, truth must be logically coherent and inclusive of all relevant data.

Since experience is what theories of consciousness are trying to account for, I’m not sure how a theory of consciousness could reasonably omit it without leaving something essential unaddressed.

Even if science continues to make progress on mechanisms and neural correlates, accounts of consciousness that exclude inner experience seem by definition, explanatorily incomplete.

I’m approaching this as someone interested rather than formally educated on the topic, so please forgive any misreading. I’m not sure I understand the assumption that panpsychism cannot successfully accommodate scientific theories of mind, as I don’t see them as competitors.

I think so too. Everything has become so outrageous that few seem to care about the Epstein files anymore. I also feel that because women and children are involved there is this sense of...eehh

Linocut print on paper by Aaron Douglas depicting three stylized, mask-like human figures arranged side by side against a dark, textured background. The figures are vertically elongated and rendered in flat shapes, primarily in shades of green and yellow, with black outlines and details. Each figure has a simplified face with almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a small, closed mouth. The faces are symmetrical and frontal, with minimal expression, giving them a solemn, ceremonial appearance.

All three figures wear tall, crown-like headdresses with angular points and geometric patterns. The central figure’s headdress is the tallest and most intricate, featuring diamond shapes and vertical bands, while the two outer figures have slightly different crown forms, each with its own pattern and silhouette. The bodies are simplified into narrow vertical shapes, with the figures appearing close together, almost touching, emphasizing unity and rhythm.

The surface of the print shows visible texture from the linocut process, with rough edges, speckling, and scratched lines throughout the background and figures. Thin diagonal and vertical scratch marks run across the image, adding visual movement and a sense of energy. The contrast between the bright yellow and green figures and the dark background draws attention to the faces and headdresses. Overall, the composition feels symbolic and stylized rather than realistic, emphasizing pattern, repetition, and presence over individual detail.

Painted portrait of a black man, by Aaron Douglas. The man is shown from the chest up, set within a simple, light-colored wooden frame. The figure wears a loose white shirt with an open neckline and a soft white cap that covers his hair. His skin is rendered in deep, warm tones, modeled with subtle highlights and shadows that give the face and neck a sculptural presence. He is turned slightly to the viewer’s left, his head gently angled, with a calm, introspective expression and relaxed mouth. His gaze does not meet the viewer directly, instead looking off to the side, contributing to a sense of quiet inwardness rather than confrontation.

The background is a flat, muted blue-green field, softly textured and without detail, which contrasts with the warmth of the figure’s skin and the pale clothing. Brushwork is restrained and painterly, with visible strokes that emphasize form without excessive detail. The composition is simple and balanced, focusing attention on the sitter’s presence rather than narrative or symbolism. The overall mood is dignified and contemplative, emphasizing the individuality of the subject through posture, expression, and color rather than through overt identifiers or context.

Photograph by Bernard Bardinet showing Fabienne Verdier working in her studio, seen from an elevated, almost overhead perspective. Verdier is positioned at the top edge of a large rectangular canvas laid flat on the floor. She leans forward with focused concentration, her hands extended toward the painted surface, as if guiding or assessing the movement of the brushstroke.

The canvas features a bold, sweeping red form painted across a muted blue-gray ground. The red paint appears thick and gestural, with visible streaks and variations in opacity that record the force and direction of the artist’s movement. Vertical drips and irregular edges suggest fluid motion and gravity at work. To the right of the red form, small vertical lines of black calligraphic marks are visible on the canvas.

Surrounding the canvas on the floor are circular wooden stands and containers holding brushes, ink blocks, pigments, and buckets of liquid paint or water. These tools are arranged around the work area, forming a loose ring that emphasizes the physical, ritual-like nature of the painting process. The studio floor has a rough, textured surface marked by stains and traces of previous work.

Verdier wears a light-colored shirt with a dark vest, her hair pulled back, and appears fully absorbed in the act of painting. The composition highlights the scale of the canvas, the bodily engagement of the artist, and the dynamic relationship between movement, material, and gesture in her practice.

Ressac III – Rythms and Reflections by Fabienne Verdier. Large abstract painting on a warm ochre-gold background with a textured, paper-like surface. Across the lower two-thirds of the composition, broad black brushstrokes move horizontally from left to right in layered bands. The strokes vary in density and opacity, with rough, striated edges that reveal the direction and pressure of the brush.

Some black forms appear thick and opaque, while others are thinner and partially transparent, allowing the ochre ground to show through. Drips and splatters of black paint descend vertically from several strokes, creating gravity-driven lines that contrast with the horizontal motion. Additional fine marks and irregular edges suggest repeated gestures and rhythmic movement, like waves advancing and receding.

The upper portion of the painting remains largely open and uncluttered, emphasizing the contrast between empty space and the dense accumulation of marks below. The overall effect is one of tension between stillness and motion, with the horizontal strokes evoking rhythm, flow, and reflection rather than figurative imagery.

This image is Hiroshi Sugimoto's "Tasman Sea, Rocky Cape, 2016" from his renowned seascape series. The photograph is characteristically minimalist, divided into two distinct horizontal sections. The upper half is a luminous, pale gray-white expanse representing the sky, while the lower portion consists of a darker gray gradient depicting the Tasman Sea. The horizon line dividing these two elements is perfectly straight, creating a stark, meditative composition.

Sugimoto's seascapes are known for their contemplative quality and reduction of the natural world to essential elements. In this image, the water appears smooth and ethereal, with subtle tonal variations within the gray palette. The photograph has a dreamlike, timeless quality typical of Sugimoto's work.

The image exemplifies Sugimoto's technique of using long exposures, which smooths the movement of the water and clouds into serene, almost abstract planes of light and dark. This process removes specific temporal details, creating a sense of timelessness and universality.

The location - Rocky Cape on the Tasman Sea - is not explicitly visible in the minimalist composition, as geographic specificity is deliberately subdued in favor of capturing the essential character of sea and sky meeting.

Sugimoto's seascapes often invite contemplation about time, impermanence, and the fundamental relationship between earth and sky. This particular image, with its subtle gradations of gray and perfect balance, embodies his philosophical approach to photography as a medium that can capture both time and timelessness simultaneously.

"The image captures a mesmerizing aerial ballet—pigeons in mid-flight, swirling and gliding as if choreographed by the wind itself. Their wings spread wide, forming fluid, dynamic shapes against the backdrop of the sky. Some birds ascend gracefully, while others angle downward, creating an intricate pattern of movement. The sunlight filters through their feathers, revealing subtle shades of gray, white, and hints of iridescence. The sky, a soft gradient of blues, acts as the perfect stage for this avian dance. It’s a moment of pure freedom—nature’s own spontaneous performance." - Copilot
