How you feel is fair

After the excitement of first term, second term can seem like coming back to reality.

This is a normal feeling for students, and remember - if you got through first term, you can get through this!
Stay active and create routines for yourself, with plenty of time for your wellbeing.

Friendships change

It's natural for friendship groups to change at uni, but this can be upsetting. But remember, people are usually happy to make new friends!

Try to take advantage of opportunities to make new friends:

Try joining a society
Or invite a coursemate for coffee

Second term can often feel more academically challenging than the first. If youโ€™re struggling, reach out and use the support available at your uni, such as personal tutors and study skills mentors.

Our website also has plenty
of resources to help you figure out what works best for you.

I joined Student Minds as a Student Trustee in April 2023, driven by a genuine belief in the charityโ€™s mission and a strong alignment with its values.

Iโ€™d encourage any student to apply, even if you feel you may not have enough experience. When I started, I had limited knowledge of governance, but I was welcomed into a supportive Board that challenged me, listened to me, and encouraged me to grow. I am really proud to be a Trustee of Student Minds and support the charity to achieve its mission and strategy.

If you are passionate about empowering students across the UK and transforming the higher education sector so that no student is held back by their mental health, then definitely apply - the Board needs you!

Trans

A word that trans people can use to describe themselves if their own sense of gender (their gender identity) does not match or sit easily with the gender they were assumed to have, based on the sex they were assigned at birth.

This definition can be used as a very broad single-word umbrella term to include trans men, trans women, non-binary people, gender fluid people, agender people and anyone else with an experience of gender like or similar to the above.

Non Binary

One of a number of terms people might use to describe the experience of having a gender that is neither male nor female, both male and female and/or between, beyond or unrelated to the binary categories of man and woman.

Some people use it as an umbrella term, encompassing a spectrum of experiences such as those described under gender fluid and agender.

Cisgender

One of a number of terms people might use to describe the experience of having a gender that matches their sex assigned at birth in the typically expected way. In other words, a man assigned male at birth, or a woman assigned female at birth.

It is important to have a term to describe this life experience, because otherwise the norms associated with it can be invisible, and the privileges attached to it can be taken for granted.
