Always good to record a Myotis species other than Daubenton’s and Natterer’s at our swarming site. I think this is only the third record!

The scale of the impact of Ash Dieback is pronounced in the woods of Littondale in @yorkshiredales.org.uk How this will affect bat populations remains to be seen.

Noctule bat being released.

I love Noctules. They’re a bat that’s often recorded, pretty common, but in the UK there are still fairly large gaps in our knowledge about them. In the rest of Europe they’re a migratory species, covering up to 1500 kilometres but here πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™‚οΈ #bats #Chiroptera #research #conservation #ecology

Ever wondered how morphology is affected by climate? Our new paper in Ecography shows sex-specific shifts in body size of European #bats in response to temperature & rainfall across space, but no clear temporal changes due to high variability 🌍🌐πŸ§ͺ

This year’s Noctule πŸ¦‡ pups are well developed already, judging by footage from this morning. I originally set up the Secacam 7 so we knew bats were present at a remote roost before setting off on the 1.5 hour drive to monitor them, but the insight into how bats are using this roost is so valuable

Good example of a healing bat wing membrane. New white skin forming around the holes. Eventually they will close up completely but the skin will always be paler in those areas.

This study shows that there are two distinct lineages responsible for white-nose disease. They co-occur throughout Europe in sympatry but show different host specialisation.
