What is wild is the answer to β€˜what can an opposition party do anyway’ is partly answered by things Democrats have occasionally done, just half assed and inconsistently.

LOL.

Nothing makes some Democratic partisans madder than the suggestion that politics exists (outside the voting booth.)

I am genuinely curiousβ€”were either of you adults when Obama took office?

And this thinking will incorrectly lead people to think everything is fine when Trump is gone because it obscures that he is part of a long term political project that had flourished in the rot.

People keep saying this sort of thing, but the primary mechanism for stopping it is an opposition partyβ€”all Trump had done is reveal that this mechanism doesn’t exist.

Our university president quietly used his political capital to change the funding structure to β€œsave” low enrollment majors by doing the reverse. It is indeed a choice.

Rendering people documentless is about constructing them as targets for deprivation and violence

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.

The reason you can’t give a single inch on anything be it trans rights or dignity for unhoused people is that they, democrats and republicans alike, will take it and say thanks what else is in your pockets? They won’t say thanks actually.

Many Dems continue to try to outsource the work of challenging, attacking and resisting Trump to a media that is working desperately to uphold him.

It's not just conservatives who treat "DEI" as holding society back.

Ruth Wilson Gilmore notes leftists blame identity politics for solidarity failing. "Often what they really mean, given the examples they choose, is that Black people or women of all races interrupted and messed up class politics."

One would think that this would merit an emergency convening of all Blue state governors, Attorneys generals and Congressional representatives. It's a declaration of war on one state which means they'll do it to others too.

historical detail I can't help but bring up: by some accounts, the event that instigated the British soldiers to open fire on Crispus Attacks and the rest of the crowd in the Boston Massacre was a soldier being hit by a snowball

It’s funny because people will swear the racial revanchists of our current moment are blazing exciting new and dangerous trails of thought, and they’re very much regurgitating the philosophy of the embittered former slaveowners.

At this point, the methods are pretty consistent. Propaganda ("birth control is bad for you blah blah"). Informal coercion via bribes and threats. Formal coercion via regulation (limits on who can access). Using the law and courts.
