corridor zoning is bad policy!
when @michaeljanz.bsky.social convinced me to come check out Edmonton & give talk that became my book 'building for people' - i was floored they allowed 5-6 story buildings off polluted arterials, and 6-8 plexes everywhere. edmonton was leading the US and canada.
we shouldnβt divide our cities like TV dinners with zoning. we should plan cities like salads and mix everything up
09.12.2024 00:15 β π 386 π 46 π¬ 17 π 8An Instagram post from the Assembly of First Nations reading: Important Travel Advisory The Assembly of First Nations (AFN) has heard reports that some First Nation citizens have been subjected to increased questioning and detainment by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). The AFN strongly condemns these actions and reaffirms First Nationsβ inherent and Jay Treaty rights to cross-border mobility. The AFN advises any First Nations members traveling to the U.S. to carry valid identification, including a Status Card or a Canadian passport. Anyone requiring assistance with Status Card applications, renewals, replacements, or urgent processing related to travel may contact Indigenous Services Canadaβs Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS) Program at 1-800-567-9604 or visit www.canada.ca/indigenous-services-canada. Please note that federal law enforcement may not be familiar with Tribal IDs. If an ICE agent does not accept your Tribal ID as identification, the Native American Rights Fund recommends that you request to speak to their supervisor. In emergency cases, Canadian citizens in the U.S. can contact the Canadian Consulate for assistance through 1-613-996-8885.
Iβm not sure how much notice this has received but the Assembly of First Nations in Canada has issued a travel advisory for the United States after reports that Indigenous people are being increasingly questioned and detained by ICE. www.instagram.com/p/DT-_SacDEH...

I wrote this song on Saturday, recorded it yesterday and released it to you today in response to the state terror being visited on the city of Minneapolis. Itβs dedicated to the people of Minneapolis, our innocent immigrant neighbors and in memory of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.

The Alberta Healthcare Disaster, with Dr. Paul Parks
Parks' unfiltered description of AB's health system catastrophe is unsettling.
Who's responsible? @abdaniellesmith.
Share this interview. Every Albertan should watch it.

Why should Alberta stay in Canada? The reasons arenβt just economic or legal. I hope you will read and share my robust rebuttal to those trying to break up our country. And I hope youβll respond. #cdnpoli #Alberta #ableg #abpoli #Canada #SenateofCanada

NEW: A podcaster accused of harassing a former AHS director said he was hired by an Edmonton lawyer, court docs show. That lawyer has ties to Sam Mraiche, who owns companies at the centre of Alberta's procurement controversy.

Bryan Ward acted for Mraiche in a property flipped to the Alberta government for a $300,000 profit.

A heck of a chart: in every single one of the 10 major US cities that built the most housing between 2017 and 2023, rents for older, existing units fellβoften by quite a bit.

NEW POST
While cities across North America struggle with housing shortages, Edmonton is proving that zoning reform works.
In 2025, for the first time in history, the number of homes permitted in 5-8 unit rowhomes surpassed detached homes. π§΅

This is exactly what I mean. Every single day Canada picks and chooses when international law applies and when we can safely ignore it. Pretending otherwise is willful ignorance.

"Should I chain myself to a tree over this?"
A resident in Dovercourt is threatening to because an infill development is being built in her cul-de-sac.
But when we look at the numbers, the area's population has halved in the last 50 years, plenty of parking.
So, probably not
Donβt like rising property taxes? Consider:
- driving less/using transit more (to save our infrastructure)
- welcoming development in your mature neighbourhood (to add rate payers without building new infra)
- buying less from Amazon (they donβt pay taxes to us but use infra)
- going downtown
I *love* this street transformation in Edmonton, Alberta.
I visited it under construction almost two years ago but more progress is visible in Google Street View.

Graphic asking βWhat does it take to move 1000 people? One linked train with four cars, 15 buses, or 625 cars requiring over 5 acres of parking.β
What does it take to move 1000 people? Smart infrastructure supporting choices that donβt take up so much space (or produce so much emissions/pollution, cost so much public money etc).
Mobility in cities is about space.

One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back.
Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance.
Be a housing fan.
