It's St Andrews Day, which is also a great day to read Scottish books and authors!! Here are eleven recent-ish Scottish SFFH reads that I loved, to add to your TBR pile! πβ¨

How interesting. I've never seen one before. I love that I'm always learning new things about tea. I'll have to go look those up now. Thank you!

I agree with the others, your setup is always lovely.
I compiled a cookbook that year for the office, and spent weeks researching a way to make soft chocolate chip cookies without the right type of brown sugar.
I think the type in Europe is typically called Turbinado sugar here (upper right below) Ours looks like the stuff lower right in this image.
The sugar sold as "brown sugar" in Germany has a large crystal structure and no moisture. US brown sugar is granulated like white sugar, but still has molasses in it so it's soft and sticky in texture. It has a very specific flavor profile and is the secret to soft-style chocolate chip cookies.
26.11.2025 23:01 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0For weeks afterwards random people would come up to us on campus and tell us how good the pies were.
Anyway. That's the hardest I've ever worked for Thanksgiving dinner. Enjoy your pie!
And wish the poor UC students in Germany some luck in their baking today and tomorrow. It's worth it.
Oh wow.
That's the dream.
Today is an excellent day to support your local indie bookstore and pre-order Nobodyβs Baby, the second Dorothy Gentleman sapphic sci-fi mystery!
Bonus: the official fern shawl pattern from Violetβs yarn shop will be available around release day, entirely free!
On a Saturday night (not Thursday, we had class) the 30 of us arrived with nearly 200 germans to a sit-down dinner with candles and white tablecloths.
Four of the Americans were deputized to carve the birds. Potatoes, and gravy, and broccoli. Which were all very salty.
But the pies were amazing.
We spent two days making pie crusts and carefully dividing them between about six floors of refrigerators.
We baked in shifts the day before the dinner, until about 3am, allowing for time to cool.
Our director drove a Subaru that made three trips to carry all the pies to the cafeteria.
The only pecans that could be found were in shells. But we got six bags.
Half a dozen nutcrackers spent five hours cracking nuts with a hammer and dividing shell from nuts by hand.
Someone had to go to an international foods store in Berlin to get brown sugar and Gram crackers.
Subcommittees were formed.
Filling procurement.
Crust production.
Oven watchers.
We were all in dorms with shared kitchens, but each had an oven. We would need to make the pies in shifts.
One girl's father was convinced to bring eight cans of pumpkin in his suitcase to Frankfurt in September
That is... A lot of pie. Thus the committee.
We laughed. Our director did not.
Pie committee was a huge undertaking.
What kinds?
Debate raged. Votes were taken.
We settled on 6 types, the mandatory pumpkin and pecan. Apple, cherry, chess, & sweet potato.
We were informed at our orientation that we would need to form a Pie committee. Because we would have dinner in one of the dining rooms, and as our program director noted "the kitchen staff have figured out turkey but it is really better for everyone if you all make the pies." Many pies. 110 pies.
26.11.2025 22:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0In 2016 I was an international student at George August University in GΓΆttingen, Germany. I was a UC student so there were about 30 of us total from California. Because the program had been going so long there was a tradition that we hold Thanksgiving dinner with the American studies program.
26.11.2025 22:29 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I can attest to this also. Pecan and pumpkin are the most American pies according to the GΓΆttingen American studies department. Why? It's the two flavors that were mandatory for our Thanksgiving dinner.
