The restored Brooklyn Banks stand as a monument to contemporary street skateboarding: the act itself and the culture’s emergent civic guardianship. We checked in to hear what the space means for the generations of New York skaters localising the Banks once again 🧱 — skatebylines.com/2025/07/15/b...
Dolores focuses on women, gender minority skateboarders and inclusive skateboarding projects. “We focus on stories and milestones that have to be told by featuring skateboarders who inspire and empower community, the industry and future skateboarders,” says Abal.

Skate Bylines spoke to the editors of a handful of today’s most notable skateboarding publications — Free, Dolores, Skate Jawn and Mess — for their perspectives on a good story and how to make a pitch land.

History, as the cliché goes, is written by the victors.
Journalism, historical record of the published word, is written by successful pitchers.
“They spur the losers of the world to take heart — to rise and lose again,” writes Veeck. “Without losers, where would the winners be? So who, in the final analysis, is most entitled to historic memory?”
The New York Mets of 'Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game?' were record-making losers. They were significant, however, not only for their failure on the field but the inspiration which can be found in such failure.
Such descriptors can feel all too familiar for the writer (or any creative) who finds themselves striking out on a failed pitch or, worse yet, the deafening silence of unresponsive editors.
And what is “failing”, but a close cousin of “losing”?
In the introduction to Jimmy Breslin’s 'Can’t Anybody Here Play This Game?', an account of the New York Mets’ historically bad first year, baseball luminary Bill Veeck frames the story as “a history of the Mets, preserving for all time a remarkable tale of ineptitude, mediocrity and abject failure.”
We're back with the baseball analogies for another story on pitching, this time from the perspective of magazine editors. To unpack what makes for a good story and effective pitch we spoke to the editors of Free, Mess, Skate Jawn and Dolores ⚾️ 💨 — skatebylines.com/2025/07/01/p...

"Orson Welles had it that, 'If the camera doesn’t like an actor, it just stares at him.' Cameras loved Dylan, but skateboarders loved him better. Eventually," writes @kylebeachy.bsky.social of Dylan Rieder. — 🌹https://skatebylines.com/2025/05/26/dylan-rieder-style-was-his-soul/
"Whatever the change he caused, it was not language that did it. Dylan Rieder was no rhetorician, was not inspired to speak a movement into existence ... No, the revolution of Dylan was not linguistic. It was formal, visual, and spiritual." writes Beachy.
