I suspect the journalist was most responsible for the hyperbolic nature of the claims though I do think the siloed nature of language studies means we are often β€œdiscovering” insights well established in other areas. Though I suspect that may also be a larger structural problem of academia

Anybody suggesting that this assertion is some type of groundbreaking argument is mind boggling.

β€œTheir central claim is clear: language is not merely a spoken code. Instead, it is a dynamic, multimodal, socially grounded system shaped through interaction, culture, and shared meaning.”

Jayme Lawson from Sinners hit the nail on the head and said how I felt with the whole BAFTAs situation.

The only time they even mention women’s sports is in their efforts to try to legislate trans women out of public life. Once they are successful at that they will then begin efforts to legislate cis women out of public life with them.

This is why even if I were to accept the simplistic way people on social media now use the term performative I would still reject the description as a criticism since all good protest should have components of performance art

When a Slur Is Involuntary, Is It Racist? What the BAFTA Incident Reveals About Language, Race and Disability

The BAFTA incident has been framed as either β€œhe couldn’t control it” or β€œhe shouldn’t be allowed in public.”

Harm clearly occurred. The challenge is responding without defaulting to ableist exclusion.

love when democrats talk about kitchen table issues as if trans people and immigrants don’t have kitchen tables πŸ™ƒ

I really appreciate this TikToker with Tourette syndrome, Shay, for taking the time to educate so many of us (including me) about her disability and coprolalia in light of what happened at the BAFTAs with John Davidson when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were on stage.

I learned a lot.

An important thing to note is that this study was conducted in 2023 which was fairly early in Musk’s fascist takeover of the app. One can only assume the effects have gotten even stronger since then.

Yes, I struggle with grammatical gender, YouTube. But how do you know it isn’t part of my broader political vision to abolish it?

I don’t want a Democratic version of Trump. What I do want is a Democratic version of actually holding people accountable this time around instead of following the Biden model of β€œhealing the country” by doing nothing to protect it from fascism

The Big Chill: U. Of Texas Tells Faculty To Avoid Controversial Topics β€” Forbes The University of Texas System Board of Regents has approved a new policy that directs faculty to limit the discussion of β€œcontroversial topics” in their classes.

The overwhelming consensus of the research done on bilingual education indicates its positive social and academic effects.

This new policy means that if students find that empirical claim controversial it either needs to be eliminated or balanced with xenophobic lies.

Thousands of institutions abandoned programs, ended or rewrote scholarships, closed down clubs and publications, all in pre-emptive compliance.

And you know why?

Mostly because they wanted to do it if they thought they could blame someone else for it.

My mother requested a real ID twice and was denied. The second time I was with her and it was because her birth certificate is from Puerto Rico and included two surnames instead of the one maiden name listed on her marriage certificate. This policy will systematically disenfranchise women.

This is great news though since so many institutions acquiesced in advance the damage has already been done

Unfortunately if this has followed the path of universities acquiescing in advance and paying bribes, it is often the lawyers who are the ones advocating for it. The role of legal counsel in undermining democracy to avoid lawsuits is an overlooked aspect of this move toward fascism.

ASL Mythbusters The most frequent of the FAQs

Last night I mentioned only 8% of hearing parents learn enough sign to have a 2-way conversation with their deaf child. Many reasons, but a lot of stems from misinfo. Here's a letter of mine where I busted some of the biggest ASL/ language acquisition myths: buttondown.com/signs+wonder...

So what I learned from the America’s Next Top Model doc is that nobody in the 2000s knew rape, sexual harassment, body shaming & Blackface were problematic so it wasn’t the producers’ fault which is interesting since I seem to remember people thinking all of those things were problematic at the time

No. But people ARE being shot by ICE agents for protesting & dying in concentration camps & deported to countries they have never been to solely because they are immigrants. That sounds much like a moral panic but that one is actually being led by the Epstein class this pundit is seeking to protect.

The drunk uncle theory.

You don’t argue with the casually homophobic uncle at Thanksgiving dinner to change his mind; you argue so that the closeted cousin at the kids table knows there’s safe people and better possibilities out there

As somebody who appreciates the impact that Jairo has had on the field, I can say with certainty that this denial could not have possibly been based on scholarly impact. This was clearly a political decision. What an injustice to Jairo, his students and academic freedom

Seeing a bunch of instagram reels of people translating excepts from Benito Bowl into other languages further proves my point that it represents a vision of the world where language diversity connects us rather than divides us.

This is a good reminder of how neoliberalism got us into this mess and that there is no way that it is going to get us out of it. We need a new more equitable vision to fight for
