Yeah, it's a little bit Goosebumps tier… But the part with Wen Ning’s corpse is SO fucking good and sad. And the casting is phenomenal.

In this order, I watched The Untamed, watched the donghua, and then read the books, and my opinion is that the books are the best overall. That said, The Untamed did a few specific scenes way better and I think the order of information was presented in a more satisfying way. I think you'll like it.
