He reasons that education shouldn't be influenced by left nor right ideology. Maybe education should have such autonomy as judiciary?

So... polish minister of national defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz wants to make health education an elective course. Isn't it hilarious that he is a Doctor of Medicine and has a PhD in medical science (sic!)?

Biologist Simona Kossak (seen here riding through Białowieża Forest on her Komar) is my new hero today.

Simona Kossak was a key figure in Polish ecology, dedicated to protecting the Białowieża Forest, one of Europe’s last ancient woodlands. For over 30 years, she lived alone in a modest cabin in the forest, without electricity or water, fully immersed in the wilderness she sought to protect.

The Real-Life Polish Dr. Dolittle, Simona Kossak Simona Kossak, Polish larger-than-life zoopsychologist, can be easily compared to dr Dolittle for her skills in understanding animal tongue.

If you haven’t heard about her, I would like to introduce you to Simona Kossak- an extraordinary scientist, who fought to preserve the remnants of natural ecosystems in Poland and one of the last and the largest remaining part of primeval forest, Bialowieza.

Why it makes sense to vaccinate boys against HPV In the light of more good news about declining rates of death from cervical cancer, why do we vaccinate boys against the virus that causes it?

Brilliant and also very personal piece by @kityates.bsky.social on the HPV vaccine, the role of modelling in considering benefits and the links of HPV with several other cancers. 🧪

When I published a review on Zuranolone Frontiers in Psychiatry had 140 points, but I could publish in "Pedagogika Katolicka" ("Catholic Pedagogics") with 200 points and 0 IF.

The fun starts when you realize this score is used to decide refunds and grants. For example, when I started PhD I needed to publish in a journal with 140 points to get a 100% refund from the university and 100 to get a 60%.

Did you know that Poland has its own points system for scientific journals? It scores from 0 to 200 and only depends on the minister of science and higher education's whim. For example Nature has 200 points. When Czranek was leaving the office he raised scores for some journals even for 180 points.

BX’s mechanism in postpartum depression (PPD) involves elevating brain allopregnanolone (AP), which may decrease significantly at postpartum, back to third trimester levels. AP acts as a preferential allosteric modulator and direct activator of extrasynaptic δGABA-ARs, which causes persistent hyperpolarization of neurons and shunts network hyperexcitability. Although the precise binding location is unclear, both activation and potentiation functions of AP apparently proceed from a single interfacial binding site, specifically at the α-subunit lipid interface. AP enhances the receptor function by binding to ‘neurosteroid binding’ sites, which are distinct from sites for GABA and benzodiazepines. Based on their location and kinetics, GABA-ARs are stratified into two groups. Synaptic receptors (α1β2γ2 subunits) mediate phasic inhibition in response to presynaptic release of GABA, while extrasynaptic receptors (α4β2δ subunits) primarily contribute to tonic inhibition in response to ambient

It's been almost 20 years since the FDA required a black-box warning on product labels & advertising, alerting doctors & patients that antidepressants can cause suicidality in adolescents. A new compilation of subsequent research finds that the action caused a dramatic increase in deaths by suicide.
