illustration of folk art animals and flowers in 4 colors (green, white, yellow, and red) with a solid black background- there are alpacas, goats, geese, sheep, rabbits, chickens, and some hidden bugs surrounded by flowers, wheat, and fruit. the illustration combines traditional folk art florals and patterns with cute animals. the design is mirrored so the left reflects the right side.

This! I so far think that the students who use LLMs too much are in a minority, and (at least here) a lot still seemed to engage with our course & cared about trying to learn.

Quite a few obviously didn't, though, and it does a big disservice to their education.

The arrangement was difficult for Meitner at first. Women were not yet admitted to universities in the German state of the Kingdom of Prussia, which included Berlin. Meitner was allowed to work in the wood shop, which had its own external entrance, but she could not enter the rest of the institute, including Hahn's laboratory space upstairs. If she wanted to go to the toilet, she had to use one at the restaurant down the street. The following year, women were admitted to Prussian universities, and Fischer lifted the restrictions, and had women's toilets installed in the building. Not all the chemists were happy about this.[27] The Institute of Physics was more accepting, and she became friends with the physicists there,

Toilets have often been used as a weapon to make it difficult for women to participate in science. This was Lise Meitner's experience in 1907. (From Wikipedia) #WomenInSTEM πŸ§ͺ

Why do we keep insisting universities are run like businesses? Apart from the fact they are not meant to extract profit, they actually seem to do pretty wellβ€”Cambridge has been a leading university for 800+ years, Glasgow is almost 600 years old. How many businesses can boast that?

Women scientists often do not get recognition and visibility for their achievements as their male peers. Thanks to @indianexpress.com for highlighting stories like ours which go unnoticed, that hopefully will help to change the gender bias that still exists in society.

A tariff on one of the UK's principal exports. Universities are one of the largest employers in the UK. Their impact can be difficult to notice as they are spread across the country instead of concentrated, but this means they support many local economies.

I think these articles are great examples of science journalismβ€”not all science is clear cut. Sometimes results are inconclusive. The mystery can dive us on to collect more data to figure things out. Much of being a scientist is not making breakthroughs, but wondering why that odd thing happened? πŸ§ͺπŸ”

Curious gravitational wave may be hint at primordial black holesβ€”or just noise Astronomers approach unusual observation with caution and excitement

Great to see Dr Christopher Berry (@cplberry.bsky.social) of @uofgphysastro.bsky.social and @uofgravity.bsky.social quoted in this @science.org piece on the intriguing possibility of a new detection of gravitational waves from primordial black holes.
