in case you've never seen it, this is Roger Ebert on The Mummy
In the category of “why we should never use two y-axes,” this here is the GOAT. Absolute GOAT.
There’s a reason R won’t even let you do two y axes. That reason is this.
(That said, still a legit huge accomplishment by China.)
There's been some rumors swirling about "Windows 12" releasing later this year and being an all AI based operating system with a subscription payment model. Seems that was itself AI slop, but the backlash to such rumors will hopefully remind Microslop that we despise generative AI in our products.
Almost got me learning latex as a work around when I discovered it had a latex interpreter for displaying math but put it off after testing and discovered I could only enter one line at a time
I started to get the hang of styles for my lab manuals around the time my school started pushing us to embed everything in our course management page for accessibility. This is how I learned some of the formatting converted but other things were such a mess I ended up editing raw html to be readable
Definitely - and I think it’s to your credit that some of your videos of pushed me to want to dig back and find pdfs of some of the older sources to learn more. But also I couldn’t resist sharing this beauty the world too
As someone that has just recently been getting into battletech I have appreciated having people like Big Red to learn the history of the game from while still bringing to a modern context (see reply for the original 80s art that inspired this wonderful portrait)
For the morning crew, a ramble last night about how thinking about economics can improve the stories a wargame battle can tell.
Adding this here, with a nice summary of different ideas bsky.app/profile/aemo...
Provocative!
Reminder:
"Seeks revenge" is a bizarre way to describe "suing over discrimination".

It is active insanity for DoD to want to allow AI targeting without human input.
Just straight up guaranteed war crimes and murder of innocents.
Note: not “logs” as in “data logs” but “logs” as in “things that were recently trees until a percussion wave stripped their branches, uprooted them, and threw them into the river”
streaming link opens up very soon! get your credit cards ready, get your drinks and snacks, mute the word "Trump" on here if you haven't already, and get ready to have your mind expanded by a dozen nerds nerding out
As a Black man with Tourette Syndrome, the Public Advocate has some thoughts on BAFTA, Pt. 1:
Hear about his experience with Coprolalia, his thoughts on how BAFTA mishandled the moment, and the need for care for all who are harmed:

Bluesky deserves to enjoy this amazing They Might Be Giants experiment, which I can't really summarize in a skeet

"But you can't make all those people US citizens"
Why not?
It shouldn't be harder to make people safe and secure in this country than it is to commit crimes against humanity.
Here is what I think.
TPS status revoked? cool, you should get US citizenship
Spent any time in Dilley or Whipple? cool, you should get US citizenship
Someone took your bunny hat? cool, you should get US citizenship
look if a Democrat wants me to be really fired up about voting for them, they will promulgate the Crimes Against Humanity Reparations Act which gives US citizenship to everyone targeted by the Trump administration.
SCOTUS is dealing with problems that arise from justices’ ownership of individual stocks.
What did the court do to address this ethical question? Did the justices agree to divest from individual stock ownership? Of course not.
Parties are directed to include stock ticker symbols in their briefs.
Definitely feel this with my lab classes where I put most of the theory in videos I recorded for them to watch outside of class. And constantly get asked to explain more about a topic only to find they didn’t even use the info I’ve already provided.
do you know what would help!!!!!!!! living in a society that lets people experiment with their gender without treating it like the most important thing in the world!!!!!!! letting people get it right or wrong without politicising their decisions!!!!!!! just being chilled about gender!!!!!! aaahhhhhh
Whenever people gush over AI I'm going to think about Sir Arthur Conan Doyle being utterly convinced that he'd discovered real scientific evidence of real fairies because he saw these pictures
I've been thinking of starting a rewatch from my DVD set. Definitely recommend people checking it out while it's accessible
I love when English folks say “oh you won’t have the context for this” & I absolutely do because of the Public Broadcasting System.*
*and/or the niche in my generation that spoke entirely in Izzard monologues for a period, etc.
I wrote a fragging Shadowrun book!!
Food is a multi-billion nuyen industry. Learn how the corps make money (meaning work for runners) of agriculture and food manufacturing, how to act at a high-end restaurant, the way corps run chain dining, and which corps are feeding us! (affiliate link)
Teaching organic chemistry lecture for the first time and hit stereochemistry today. Learned lesson that I need to be very careful with phrasing to make clear “this is a chiral molecule” from “this is achiral” #chemsky
Quick thread about pitfalls in the Epstein Files, stuff that I'm seeing reported as fact that's somewhere between dubious and outlandish.
