I think this applies to a lot of things today and it's sad that it's ended up this way. Video games for example are really bad in general about not milking their players dry. Companies have changed their philosophy to maximize profit minimize risk (it's always been that way but it's much worse now)

I've started the night lords series of books starting with Soul Hunter and it's been pretty good so far. Deacon of Wounds was a horror Nurgle book that I thought was solid.

Books can be hard if you don't know a fair bit of lore, but I'd recommend the Eisenhorn series as well. I'd also suggest just choosing any faction(s) that interest you and exploring the franchise that way. I learned a lot about the universe as a whole that way.
