Our Belgian chiffchaff recovery is back! ๐Ÿชถ๐Ÿ’

It was ringed on 10th October 2025 in Liรจge, Belgium, and was re-trapped on 8th December 2025 in Cheshire, UK (669km movement). A small insight into where UK wintering chiffchaffs may breed (although it was likely ringed on migration). #ornithology

Puffins and Shags seem to have been hit hardest by recent storms, with many reports of birds washed ashore. This includes one Isle of May Puffin that was ringed as an adult in 1995, making it at least 34 years old!

In this work led by Josh Wilson, we labelled 4824 drone-based images containing 49990 birds from 101 species and trained a bird detection and ID model. The model achieved precision = 0.91 for detection & 0.65 for species/age/sex classification.

New paper: Most birds use dayโ€“night cycles to time activity - but how do Arctic birds cope with nonstop summer light? Male snow buntings keep a daily rhythm year-round, though it weakens during spring migration as flights are scheduled more flexibly

For years, experts have warned that nature loss would become a security threat.

Now a national security assessment confirms it: biodiversity collapse risks food shortages, economic instability and global disorder.

Nature underpins our global safety. So why is UK Government failing to protect it?

Gentoo penguins resting and standing on rocky terrain with snowy mountains and icy waters in the background under a clear blue sky.

There's been a record shift in the breeding season of Antarctic penguins ๐Ÿง

Gentoos are advancing breeding by an average of 13 days per decade, and Adรฉlies and Chinstraps by an average of 10 days, likely in response to climate change.
