so much software is this kind of 'unreliably nondeterministic' these days and it's.. owie

even the slightest unreliable behavior in software can make it *scary* to use

especially if the unreliable behavior makes you have to try the same thing 5 times over, or worse, it'd be a mess to undo (even if it's a simple thing like 'last read stats' getting clobbered)
