Title says: "Soot from coal turned many birds gray in the 1900s."
A photo of bird samples with tags on their feet.
2 Horned Larks: one from 1904 is gray with a black neck and gray under the beak. The one from 1966 has a white belly, black neck and yellow under the beak.
2 Red-headed Wookpeckers: one from 1901 has a gray belly and a dusky red under its beak. The one from 1982 hasa white belly and a brighter red under its beak.

#CleanAir is important for us & for all wildlife. These bird samples tell the story. While our air is cleaner now, we can do much better & need to keep up pressure on all levels of govt. that #CleanAir is more important than $$.

Photo of a school with a paved parrking lot in front of it. It the foreground is curb cut from the parking lot lined with stones that empties into a large swale filled with an assortment of shrubs, bunch grasses, & small trees.
Text says, "A school's rain garden absorbs stormwater from its parking lot."

Why is installing rain barrels & rain gardens important? Sequestering stormwater reduces pollution of our waterways & rain barrel water is better for plants & soil. Read my article for more info & further resources on rain barrels and rain gardens: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2025/04/rain...

A drawing with greenish ink of a caterpillar on a twig at the top
Text says,""Caterpillars are the answer" Dr. Doug Tallamy, author of Nature's Best Hope sheds light on the importance of caterpillars in our ecosystem"
A head-shot photo of a middle aged man wearing a gray brimmed hat & a blue plaid shirt is under the text.

It's almost spring we will see more caterpillars. Traditionally gardeners were warned to remove them since they eat the plants. Doug Tallamy changed the whole narrative & says that "Caterpillars are the answer!" & trees, mainly oaks, play a role: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2025/07/the-...

Photo of a flying green hummingbird with its beak inserted into a tubular red flower borne on a horizontal green stem with several other red flowers. There are other stems with red flowers and bright green leaves. A dark wooded area is out of focus in the background.

#AMomentinNature was this hummingbird feeding at a coral honeysuckle (Lonicera sempervirens) flower. This is an easy-to-grow bird-friendly & pollinator-friendly climbing plant native to most of eastern North America. It's a bine, not a vine.

Photo of a flowering stalk. The stem is square. The bilateral light blue flowers are perpendicular to the stem and at the base of each flower is a set of green bracts with reddish margins. The background is an out-of-focus mowed area and beyond that is a darker wooded area.
The text says, "Lyreleaf sage Salvia lyrata"

#PlantMoreNatives Lyreleaf sage (Salvia lyrata) is native to most of eastern North America and can make quite a show in wooded areas, pollinator gardens, & unmowed yards in the spring.

Garlic chives (Allium tuberosum) is an easy-to-grow perennial crop that supplies harvests all year here in North Florida. It has flat solid leaves & so is on the garlic side of this genus. The onion side has hollow leaves. Here's my take: greengardeningmatters.blogspot.com/2014/08/garl...

12 photos of different butterfly eggs. The eggs are all on green leaves, but they each have different markings, shapes and striations. The eggs are Monarch, Question Mark, Cabbage White, Yellow Sulphur. Red Admiral, Silver Spotted Skipper, Wild Indigo Duskywing, Hackberry Emperor, Black Swallowtail, Spicebush Swallowtail, West Virginia White. Title at the top says, "A Dozen Betterfly Eggss"

Beautiful butterfly eggs! What will happen when the larvae emerge? As sustainable gardeners we need to supply non-poisoned larva food sources for the butterfly & moth caterpillars. For info on larval food sources, see: www.butterfliesandmoths.org or butterfly-lady.com/plant-host-p...

Cartoon of a bird stroking its lower beak sitting on the ground with its feet splayed foward. The bird is looking at the end of a worm sticking out of the ground.
The title under the cartoon says, "The earlt bird gets the worm"
The bird's words above its head are, "So you just dig through the soil, consuming nutrients from decaying organic matter? That actually makes a lot of sense."

This early bird has some deep thoughts!

Is your yard and your community bird friendly? Worms & other soil organisms do much better in non-poisoned areas.

Phot of a hand holding a black coffee mug with white lettering. The first part of the lettering is the chemical symbol for iron "Fe" (with a rectangle with "26" in the upper left and "55.847" in the upper right) followed by "male"
The text on the line below says, "The original Iron Man"

Celebrate International Women's Day 2026. We hold up half the sky!

FYI, “Fe” is the symbol for Iron, the chemical element with atomic number 26, symbolized from the Latin ferrum. It is the most abundant element by mass on Earth.

Photo of several orange & yellow marigold flowers and their highly divided green leaves.

Marigolds (Tagetes spp.) are members of the daisy family, Asteraceae. They are useful in our gardens for beauty, to attract pollinators, & as companion plants. Read my article for uses in gardens & for their interesting history around the world.

#PlantMoreNatives! Ohio spiderwort (Tradescantia ohiensis) is native to most of eastern North America & most of Florida. It attracts pollinators, especially bees. Each day, 1 to 3 flowers bloom in each flower head, which has 20+ buds. It's edible.

Photo over the shoulder of a woman wearing a beige plush jacket of a pair of glossy black ravens on a log fence railing. The Ravens were only a few feet from the woman. Text says, "Northern Raven (Corvus corax) Bryce Canyon"

I had a lovely conversation with these Northern Ravens in Bryce Canyon in Feb. 2022. #NationalParks are America's BEST idea.

Photo of the earth from space showing the Americas. Text says, "There is NO Planet B!!"

Maybe "Save our only planet" is too abstract or too huge for most people to relate to. "Save the birds" may generate more compassion. Of course, taking action to save the birds will also help the planet. My latest blog post may inspire people to take some first steps for the birds & for themselves.

North American birds are dying off faster. It signals a human crisis, too. The accelerating decline of birds is a bellwether of far deeper biodiversity crisis — one that threatens not only beloved species but the humans who live alongside them.

The Washington Post cited the same research. The birds are NOT OK!https://wapo.st/4bch6FB

The Birds are NOT OK! BUT, we can help by making our yards more bird-friendly by stopping all landscape-wide pesticides, by reducing lawns, & by planting more natives, especially those that are caterpillar food.
