I don’t think it’s “shut up and calculate” - as long as all the interpretations are not distinguished by different predictions for experiments, they are one and the same physical theory. Interpretations in physics are only useful if they lead to differing quantitative predictions.

Controversial ‘arsenic life’ paper retracted after 15 years — but authors fight back The journal Science retracts a headline-grabbing study, but the authors vigorously defend their data and say the retraction is unwarranted.

Interesting precedent of Science retracting a paper solely based on the fact that interpretations were likely overclaiming, but without scientific misconduct. A bit torn about this, it’s difficult to draw the line and really, that’s the job of the referees go.nature.com/44MQsQI

I‘d also say that a lot of the services provided by journals are obsolete. Who needs copy editing into a format that you don’t want anyway and that introduces sometimes serious errors? Arxiv wrapper journals (like quantum) are the future.

Very interesting article that raises a problem beyond just AI: that researchers can overhype any topic with almost impunity. Even after grants have finished the question of „have you really achieved what you promised?“ isn’t seriously asked as long as some papers came out that get cited

A first step would be to provide access to SN journals free of charge to members of the affected institutes.

A quantum computer is a device that fails like a physical quantum computer. No emulator can do this and testing resilience to noise is the only reason we run stuff on non-advantage-scale QC (eg to test error correction). More morally problematic: selling stuff for which free solutions exist (qiskit)

This article fundamentally misses the point of a PhD: instead of specific knowledge, its goal is to learn the scientific method, i.e. the formulation of an hypothesis, its testing based on experiments, (dis-)proving it. This is a universal skill foundational to having impact in a job.

Forced Consent & Consent Bypass

Meta announced today that it also wants to introduce ads on WhatsApp, which will be based on personal data from Facebook and Instagram. This further integrates WhatsApp into other Meta services - an originally independent app, which initially was available for just $1 per year without ads or data usage. This also means that Meta is consolidating its social networking monopoly. EU law was actually supposed to prevent this."

Use Signal. We promise, no AI clutter, and no surveillance ads, whatever the rest of the industry does. <3

Charlie Bennett at Helgoland 2025 (paraphrased): “As scientists, we have a duty to teach people to enjoy being proven wrong and to embrace changing their minds in light of new evidence—because that’s what we do best.”

I agree. I found “The Night of the Physicists” by Richard von Schirach, written from the transcripts of the PoW camp of Heisenberg, Hahn and Co., very illuminating. From this account it seems that Heisenberg simply failed in building the bomb rather than actively sabotaging the project.

You ask them. I think they edited the figure in illustrator to change fonts and then accidentally clicked on a datapoint. They also removed the x axis ticks, making the data unreadable.

So much agree. Formatting for journals is a huge waste of time and a big source of errors: outrageous things happened to me, from removal of axis labels to deletion of datapoints! Change has to come from the top though: grant, tenure & hiring committees should not take into account journal IF.

I think this is entirely community dependent. I have almost never seen a meaningful article in Quantum Science which wasn’t already fine formatting- and grammar-wise on arXiv submission. By contrast, I have experienced copy editors remove data points in my figures, in a journal with $12k APC!

I guess in quantum simulation we could even tolerate a state which has errors everywhere except within the lightcone of the observable, ie actually O(N) qubits can be erroneous. Most gate estimates do not take this into account (because errors on the unitary are bounded instead of observables).

Now is the time for post-quantum crypto.

Also: how would transversal gates change this result?

That would be important to clarify! There are many misconceptions around what exactly quantum computers could be useful for in cond mat.

This is awesome! It would be awesome to also add transversal gates when known - for near-term applications it would be awesome to just search for a specific gate

So true. It often takes a while until graduate students realize that the value of scientific work lies in doing something that no one has ever done before, rather than learning something for themselves (which is what they were drilled to do up to that point in their lives).
