California Press Rights Tracking Doc (Consolidated)

I've been slower the last couple days posting incidents where police violate press rights at ICE protests in Los Angeles.

That's only because I'm (temporarily) prioritizing this tracker spreadsheet, used for accountability efforts. 50+ in under a week. I get word of more incidents every few hours.

Text reads: "She Survived Genital Cutting, Then Shared Her Reconstruction on TikTok." Photo by Nariman El-Mofty for The New York Times.

As a child, Shamsa Sharawe was brutally cut. As an adult, she underwent hours of reconstruction surgery. As a mother, she vowed to protect her daughter from female genital cutting. And now as a social media influencer, she is persuading others to do the same. trib.al/z8NU9U3

I actually met him once in the Denver airport. He was waiting for his luggage and there was a gaggle of people standing probably 15 feet back from him awe. I was in college and figured, why not ... so I walked up to him, introduced myself as a journalism student and we chatted for a few minutes.

This isn't exactly what you're looking for but the Rabbit Hole podcast from @kevinroose.com at @nytimes.com (a few years ago now) is a really good primer on how algorithms drive radicalization online.

Coastal economies rely on NOAA, from Maine to Florida, Texas and Alaska – even if they don’t realize it NOAA’s work has kept fisheries from collapsing, helped coastal ecosystems survive extreme heat and battled invasive species, among many other tasks essential to coastal economies.

Some scattered thoughts after the most shocking and horrible moment of US diplomacy most of us have ever seen. Not even sure what the point of writing anything about this is, but here goes. 1/

I’ve decided to leave Scientific American after an exciting 4.5 years as editor in chief. I’m going to take some time to think about what comes next (and go birdwatching), but for now I’d like to share a very small sample of the work I’ve been so proud to support (thread)

"Flowers" from Hadestown YouTube video by Hannah Fulmore

Our kid is hanging with us in advance of this weekend's BirthdayPalooza and she's using the time to drop some new recordings.

Check out this beautiful rendition of one of most quietly powerful songs from Hadestown.

Are We Voting For People, Policies or Partisanship? I hope our takeaways from this year's voting are not related to which political party made missteps or who won & lost. In every election, it's the American people who either win or lose.

White text on a red background:

Deradicalize Your Sons curriculum/resource list.

What should be on it?
I will assemble!

I know the Southern Poverty Law Center has a good, basic handbook for parents on understanding extremism online and how to keep your kids from getting sucked in, but that alone isn’t enough.

I’d like to assemble resources. What ‘chu got?

Roughly 400 Books Removed From Wilson County School Libraries District removes books including ‘The Bluest Eye,’ ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and Dr. Seuss’ ‘Wacky Wednesday’ to comply with state law

Nearly 400 books removed from school libraries in one Tennessee county. Based on my skim of the list, most of them appear to be books by women, authors of color, &/or LGBTQ+ authors.

A reminder to people that independent bookshops that are coming to here from Twitter are taking a financial risk as that social media outlet is a major factor in marketing and getting sales.

Not exactly what I want to hear after recently abandoning my dissertation; but what I absolutely need to hear as I pivot to some more creative projects that have been begging for time. Thx for the reminder.
