I think the Club option is powerful and far better from a risk/reward profile than just buying out an additional arb year. Plus there’s a lot of incentive for Horton to get to FA earlier. Free agency at 31 is much better than 32

Cade Horton might have the perfect risk/reward projection for the Cubs and Horton/his agency to come together on an extension after this season.

Cubs lock in $54m and Horton earns lifetime security while still having opportunity to enter free agency at 30/31.

He’s great! His football playing plans could impact that decision

I no longer scout it. I barely even know any names this year. I only watched some quick highlights on a half dozen players I've seen connected to Cubs.
So, I can't help you with any analysis this year.

I hear ya but I actually don’t think the steps to fix Sandy aren’t that crazy

He’s fixable

Oh yeah there’s definitely work to be done, but he’s much closer to ready than a guy who can’t stick in the rotation

I think we’d all have said the same about Mackenzie Gore, Zack Wheeler, and Tarik Skubal as well FWIW

Respectfully, I have watched Cade Horton since before he was drafted and I couldn’t disagree more

Horton has definitely looked inconsistent but last nights start felt unfairly magnified by other factors.

But every team needs it so I wouldn’t count on teams being able to add two starters.
Adding an arm they believe could start a playoff game pushing Cade Horton down to be their 5? I think a whole of teams would jump at that.

I’d be surprised if they got two SP. Maybe that happens, but it’s a big ask. One very good starter goes a long way

I’d trust Craig Counsell on how he wants to develop Cade Horton. If it keeps looking like last night then of course that’s not viable for a team in contention, but one start where he couldn’t keep his team in the game against a premium opponent is a learning moment, not a referendum.

Not sure it’s the best fit positional, but Rob Refsnyder would be a great lefty masher if the Red Sox ended up selling. He’s hit lefties like Suzuki and Tucker over the last two years.

Yeah it's not a flashy move. Ultimately the Cubs need more pitching. Hoyer has said this publicly that it's a hard time of the year to make trades. So you work with what you can, pull some levers, and hope to get a guy where it clicks. If not, try again. Even if it does work, keep trying.

Ultimately the Cubs have to land a guy. It's not horseshoes. "Almost" doesn't count. However if your concern is whether the Cubs are going to try seriously to add, I'd bet strongly there will be that push.

Could the Cubs still execute a deal? For sure. Sometimes the stars align. The Cubs clearly know they have concerns in the pen. And they know they've lost Justin Steele for the rest of the year. This winter they spoke with a lot of teams on pitching and they got quite close on at least one deal...
