Volunteering has been so rewarding: doing your bit to help create the positive force that is ACBS, whether in a chapter, a SIG, being on a committee, helping to organise a conference, reviewing papers etc., it all supports contextual behavioural science being relevant & impactful.

If you are fortunate enough to go to a World Conference, then you will see how great ACBS is at creating a friendly, stimulating and transformative event – it kinda ruins you for other conferences, and you can see why people go back year after year.

I encourage anyone curious about contextual behavioural science to become an #ACBS member: the resources at contextualscience.org, the activities of chapters and SIGs, the welcoming community – these are all big pluses.

I hope that #ACBS continues as an organisation where the rich diversity of how humans connect, love & learn can be celebrated: we have so much to offer each other. No doubt this will be complicated, but I reckon this is a future worth striving for.

Personally, there are key decisions in my life that I believe only happened because of #ACT and contextual behavioural science: being open, aware and active has made me a better person to those I love and care about. I am who I am today because of #ACBS.

An exciting conference also for the sense that #ACT was really coming of age: lots of great international research findings and developments. And the Follies! Hosted at an estate where there was a swimming pool in front of the stage…which was filled with conference delegates at the end of the night.

Lots of fun sharing about science in one the oldest universities in the world, and socialising in the evening in a compact city center which meant that you had these nights of running into each other.

My favourite #ACBS World Conference to date was the 2011 World Conference in Parma, Italy. All the pleasures of a conference in Italy made for a very social conference: a beautiful city, fantastic food, wine, & perfect summer weather.

I’ve been lucky to entertain the #ACBS community in my alter ego, DJ CFunc. Choosing banging tunes & seeing the rainbow of members moving & shaking at the after-Follies dance party is a peak experience! My fondest memory was doing this for the 2017 Conference in Seville: that party could move!

In the time I’ve been in ACBS my career has shifted from being a clinician to being a researcher and academic, serving the community through Chapter activities and communicating about CBS. I could not imagine doing this without ACBS.

As ACBS grew I had the sense of a world community sharing these values, and the diversity of ways we seek to pursue them. It is very inspiring! ACBS offers me an ongoing sense of being part of something.

ACBS opened the doors of possibility: that others also cared about a progressive form of clinical psychology, that it was worth pursuing a scientific approach, and that striving to do better, guided by values of openness and compassion, well, it mattered.

After those experiences I felt like I had found my people: a community that had an approach to science and psychological practice that was authentic, personal, open, coherent and deep. So many welcoming, supportive and inspiring people to connect with.

I then happily discovered what it was like to experience ACT in workshops by Steve Hayes and Kelly Wilson in the early 2000s.

I can remember when and where it was that ACT appealed to me on a personal and professional level. I scoured the internet for resources in those early days, reading anything I could get hold of about ACT and RFT!

I was a founding member of ACBS in 2006, it was exciting to join with others in forming an international organisation about contextual behavioural science. Reading the original 1999 ACT manual was a like a lightning bolt –
