The UK government didn't want you to see this report on ecosystem collapse. I'm not surprised | George Monbiot It took an FOI request to bring this national security assessment to light. For ‘doomsayers’ like us, it is the ultimate vindication, says Guardian columnist George Monbiot

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... “It is unlikely the UK would be able to maintain food security if ecosystem collapse drives geopolitical competition for food.”
“conflict and military escalation will become more likely, ..., as groups compete for arable land and food and water resources”.

Half of world’s CO2 emissions come from just 32 fossil fuel firms, study shows Critics accuse leading firms of sabotaging climate action but say data increasingly being used to hold them to account

www.theguardian.com/environment/... "“This latest analysis reinforces a stark reality: a powerful, concentrated group of fossil fuel corporations are not only dominating global emissions but are actively sabotaging climate action and weakening government ambition.”

The world’s richest 1% have used up their fair share of emissions for 2026 in just 10 days – & the richest 0.1% in 3 days. They also invest in the most polluting industries.

We urgently need to tax them out of existence.

(We also need, as much as we can, to stop buying from polluting industries)

This in particular feels overstated. The raw materials required for data centre construction just aren't that constrained, are they? And I don't think the violent invasion of Greenland would make much of a difference even if it were?

If road deaths were a virus, we’d call it a pandemic. Safer transport helps us all – and we need it urgently Deaths on the road costs countries up to 5% of GDP. Centring transport around people, not cars, can propel development

Yeah, but it's not sufficiently regulated though. Cars kill over a million people globally every year: that's pandemic-level figures.

Counterpoint: physical scientists are wildly unqualified to provide insight on the social, political and technological shifts required.

@rebeccasolnit.bsky.social is absolutely correct: coal, oil and gas are not mandatory. Rampant capitalism is not inevitable. ExxonMobil isn't all-powerful.

It would instead focus minds on measures that address the climate emergency: cutting fossil fuel use, investing in renewables and paying for adaptation where damage is already baked in.
