Even though I'm an economist, I wish there was more focus on the human suffering from this war and less focus on the economic consequences. Hundreds of little girls are dead, and we're worried about oil prices.

Data-driven research, at its best, presents you with results that surprise you. 😲

When I began studying Seattle's minimum pay standard for delivery drivers, I personally expected to see high-attachment delivery drivers making more money after the policy went into effect. 1/13

The case for wealth taxes is entirely political. And if they cause billionaires to leave the US, good riddance.

If anyone means it, it’s Wyden.

This is the kind of leadership that is sorely lacking among elected Dems right now.

I can’t help but remember that an attempted regime change in Tehran was like the fantasy position of the fringiest group in Dick Cheney’s Circle 20 years ago

Out of curiosity, does anyone know if independents thought that Kamala Harris was weak? I think of her as stronger and tougher than Biden, and certainly more than any of the jokers currently in leadership.

This article is so, so irresponsible. There is no causal evidence in this paper. There is no way for the researchers to rule out that teens were self-medicating for undiagnosed mental illness using health system data.

It's galling to contemplate but I really think you have to admit that Musk buying X was an unqualified victory. It can't be exaggerated just how much prominent journalists, pundits, business type, etc. mistake the vibe on X for "how the country is feeling."

I’ve long suspected that people see Obama as more liberal than Biden because Obama is black and Biden is white. Harris was successfully painted as far left for the same reason. Is there any evidence consistent with this?

Do Democrats want to end it? I think Democratic voters largely do, but why would Dem electeds give up their advantage?

If you were to actually take his white supremacy and racism seriously, you would evaluate their impacts on every single decision and policy advanced by the administration. And you would be on board for future reparations.

No need to imagine. The country incarcerates children as young as 9 years old daily in youth prisons and jails. Those children are routinely sexually and physically assaulted and also emotionally tortured. They are fed terrible food and given barely any education. This country has done this for yrs.

If someone paid you $4.75 every night you slept 7+ hours, would you sleep more?

And--more importantly--would that increase in sleep change your behavior in other meaningful ways?

This new paper ran an experiment to find out.

The sad thing is that I think that’s probably the most authentic word in the whole statement. That’s how he talks.

Even when they show signs of weakness or forced regret, we must not give an inch. Authoritarian governments still respond to public opinion, which is why sustained pressure matters. We have to keep making clear that these thuggish actions are unconscionable and will not be tolerated. Don’t let up.

Apple is the hardest to boycott. I don’t shop at Amazon, deleted Insta, switched to DuckDuckGo. But I’ve used a Mac my whole life. All my old photos of my kids are sitting in a paid iCloud tier. Eventually I’ll need a new phone. No easy alternatives for this one… but open to suggestions!

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

Memory is a fragile thing in this moment, so it is important to keep in mind that Hakeem Jeffries refused to whip his caucus against ICE funding earlier this week.

On the execution in Minnesota: Obviously, the individuals involved should be held accountable. But responsibility goes to the top of ICE and CBP, and DHS. Their appropriations come up next week in the senate. Not a cent for DHS without pulling ICE and CBP off the streets, in MN and everywhere else.

USAID has been dead for almost a year now.

Hundreds of thousands of innocent people have already died as a result. Millions will likely die in the near future.

Congrats, USAID haters: you got what you wanted!

Does it feel good?

I am just a simple small-town lawyer but I really can’t think of a more toxic and self-defeating political strategy than telling your constituents the things they care about are “a distraction.”

I appreciate you but this is so tone-deaf. Blowing up the international world order isn’t a “distraction” and I think you know it.
