Trump to Resume Sending Weapons to Ukraine The U.S. will send additional defensive arms because Moscow is hitting Kyiv “very hard,” the president said.

This is a good example of how Trump’s obsession with exaggerated/fake news forms his initial point of view on a subject and then, when confronted with actual facts, he’s basically forced to change course on a major policy initiative.

“No predictive model” is telling because it relies on the assumption that predictive models are somehow objective and rational and not, for instance, built within a social system that prioritizes white supremacy. A better qualifier would be “Our predictive models” aka white people.

The right’s obsession with holding onto their guns in case they need to defend themselves against a hostile government is a misrecognition of their true desirec which is to facilitate violence on others through a hostile government

And to insist that you’re too busy saving lives to care about the lives of the students who attend your university and the lives of those in a war torn region in another part of the world is exactly why people are skeptical of academics.

Hiding behind the perceived apolitical nature of the hard sciences won’t save you. They are coming for your funding regardless of whatever resolution your faculty senate passes.

Faculty-on-Faculty War Erupts at Columbia as Trump Targets Elite School Humanities professors clash with scientists over the handling of campus protests.

This is an absolute gem from this article.

“We’re actually quite busy. We’re actually doing our job,” said Geskin. Medical doctors and scientific researchers “are trying to save lives. We don’t have the time to ruminate on all this.”

The NFL as an organization needs to be talking about these issues more openly. We need a culture shift from the sport that sets the zeitgeist.

Many stopped waiting and hoping in 2020. Some did before the first of two impeachments. I did when he published that newspaper ad condemning five innocent young men. We need to be honest about why others still support this incompetent, divisive, lying hypocrite. That is the real question.

We keep waiting — hoping — that somehow Trump will act presidential in the face of a tragedy. This day will never come. His playbook was and is race baiting. Nothing more.

The thing about Trump is he provides equal opportunity to all grifters even remotely close to his orbit. That has always involved the press, no matter whether they fall on the ideological spectrum.

Dithering over whether this was or wasn’t does not dilute its meaning to those who are always looking to the trump camp for affirmation.

Economists Are in the Wilderness. Can They Find a Way Back to Influence? Economists have long helped to shape policy on issues like taxes and health care. But flawed forecasts and arcane language have cost them credibility.

This is absolutely both a failure to communicate to the general public with narrative-driven arguments that humanize data combined with a profession that insists it’s a hard science and is impervious to critique.

I was out in the backyard when the local wolf chorus started up. Such an amazing sound. There was one calling from north east of my cottage and the pack was answering from the southwest. I apologize for my breathing. I had to run into the house and find my phone. I’m still vibrating.
