This isn’t about downplaying AI’s potential, it’s about keeping trust in medical research. Transparent and evidence-based reporting ensures we know when AI truly adds value, and when excitement might be running ahead of the science.

Avoid speculative language that risks fueling hype or misleading policymakers, clinicians, and the public.

A commentary in npj Digital Medicine by Drogt et al. (2024) offers practical ethical guidance:
Clearly define the AI system and the human comparison group in the claim itself.
Explain the scope and limits of the result, not just that AI did better in one metric.

🌍 Contextualization: Was the test setting anything like real-world clinical practice? What can’t the AI do?
📊 Empirical grounding: Is the claim supported by robust evidence, or is it speculation about the future?

While exciting, many of these statements fail to give readers the full picture, often lacking key details about:
🔍 Specification: Who exactly did the AI outperform? Specialists? Juniors? Under what conditions?

🚑 AI “outperforming” doctors? Time for a reality check and better reporting.
