Have we given too much "credit" to the pandemic for learning losses? Almost 50% of the post-pandemic decline in achievement on 8th grade NAEP was to be expected (without the pandemic!), simply using the same rate of declining achievement that began unfolding starting in 2013!

Dear Developmental Colleagues,
Iโ€™m a developmental psychologist, Associate Professor (Teaching), and Undergraduate Program Director for the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary. I specialize in social emotional learning, peer relationships, and childrenโ€™s media.
On March 25th, a developmental psychology graduate student at Tufts University in Massachusetts was abducted by the United States government. Rumeysa Ozturk is a PhD student in Child Study & Human Development with a focus on prosocial development and childrenโ€™s media. She is from Turkey and was studying in the USA on a student visa. Her visa was revoked when she participated in political letter writing asking Tufts University to acknowledge the Palestinian genocide. This political activity made her a target.
No peaceful political activity should ever lead to unlawful detainment. The Palestinian-Israel conflict is heartbreaking. My spouse and child are Jewish, we lost an Israeli family member on October 7th, 2022. Iโ€™ve seen increases in anti-semitism on university campuses in the past two years, but I know and I acknowledge that the majority of protestors are not hateful, and they want peace and human rights.
Rumeysa Ozturk is one of us. Therefore, I am calling on leaders in Developmental Psychology to stand up for Ozturk, to pressure academic societies such as SRCD, SRA, & ISSBD to release a statement regarding her unjust abduction. We need to shine a spotlight and put international pressure on this abduction to help ensure her safety and release. Please also consider writing your political representatives. Ozturk has been relocated from Massachusetts to Louisiana. Her lawyer has lost contact with her in the past day. Our efforts can make a difference during these critical days.
Sincerely,
Kathleen Hughes, PhD

Closing rural post offices will do the same thing that closing rural schools has done: Empty out rural towns.

Why? To sell off farmland for rock bottom prices to the oligarchs. Water and mineral rights and CAFOs polluting with impunity.

Itโ€™s been the plan for decades.

Truly one of the greats. He gave us the words and the permission to study inequality in a way that has shifted so many careers and in turn impacted so many lives.
