You picked a great one to get started with! It's very forgiving (won't rewet) but still handles so much like normal gouache. It's more opaque than even some acrylics out there.

Just pick 4 or so and noodle with palettes, mix stuff, have fun! Heavy watercolor paper or illoboard is your friend.

I admit my soul was offended at a “Call for queer elders - 35 and up!” And I am a smidge over that.

The Mystic Seaport museum has a huge focus on whaling ships and their history and construction and have restored at least one (The Charles W Morgan), plus they're super nice! I have taken so many stock photos there for a project.

If you don't mind me bothering a local museum volunteer with a question, I can ask the Seaport folks.
