Kyoto is filled with shrines and temples so there's so much you can do there that is not on your standard visitor itinerary that ticks the same boxes. I do recommend visiting at some point.

For example, the golden temple Kinkakuji. On the same road that the entrance to the temple is on, there's a huge temple that had no visitors except me, my sister and my partner. The monk looking after the shrine welcomed us, took our picture, was thrilled to have visitors, especially foreigners lol

I tend to visit Kyoto briefly on most trips and the areas I used to enjoy are now too crowded to do so. Instead, I've found if you see a group of tourists heading somewhere look in the opposite direction and you'll often find somewhere much more chill and much more welcoming.
